PR 12 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 17, 1992 wy po PI i "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Council would like to see hotel incorporated into development plans From Page 11 rather crude plan, representing a shopping plaza design from "40 years ago." Although Mayor Hall said council was in favor of some sort of development in that area, he said he wants to see a much aes- thetically pleasing design. He says it is "the entranceway to Port Perry" and wants it to blend into the existing aesthet- ics of the area. "Mayor Hall told Mr. Meek that "not much planning has goneinto this." Mr. Meek admitted that he was presenting "tentative plans" and that further work was required, but he was "under much duress to put something together." He said a much more detailed plan would be present- ed to council shortly. Following the meeting, May- or Hall said the township is get- ting frustrated.by the slow pace at which a proposed develop- ment is moving. It has been many years since a develop- ment on that portion of land was first proposed. But a number of problems have stalled the progress. Some council mem- bers believe it may be many more years before any develop- ment is actually built. GM and Local 222 agree on issues Following a marathon meet- ing over the weekend, General Motors of Canada and the Cana- dian Auto Workers Union Local 222 came to an agreement on is- sues concerning overtime, job security and seniority. Union representatives would not release details of the plan, until its membership is in- formed of the specifics of the agreement. One stumbling block in the agreement that bogged the talks down for weeks was the is- sue of mandatory overtime. An agreement was reached with the two sides which allows the workers to retain their rights while enabling the company to reach its production targets. They will perform in the musical during its summer run at the Elgin Theatre. No aftershock for Northern Explosion By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star They saved the best for last. That's the opinion of 25 young women who are on their way to stardom. The young women, aged nine to 15, are students of R. H. Cornish Public School and Port Perry High School, and make up the sing- ing sensation known as Northern Explosion. Just over one week ago, the choir's musi- cal talent exploded on stage at the Pantages Theatre in Toronto, and as a result, the girls - were awarded the opportunity to perform in "the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." Three other Ontario choirs will rotate with Northern Explosion during the musical's summer run at the Elgin Theatre. They are J. B. Tyrrell of Agincourt, 16th Avenue Public School of Richmond Hill, and Bayview Glen of Don Mills. When judges Robert Cooper, Lloyd Brad- shaw, and Lori Dolloff, announced the four winning choirs, the other three were an- nounced first. They then paused for dramatic effect before calling out Northern Explosion, the fourth and final winner. Dawn Taylor, who, along with Harvie Friede, is a staff advisor for Northern Explo- sion, says she saw the choir's chances fading "especially after the third name was called." But the singers saw it differently. "They were saving the best for last," many of them exclaimed during a lunchhour pizza party heldin their honor on Thursday. Many of the girls are still on a high note. When asked if they were tired, they replied, "They are (Miss Taylor and Mr. Friede), but we're not." The announcement was the climax of months of hard work which included daily lunchhour practices. But there won't be time to slow down just yet. The girls will start rehearsing in Toronto on May 20. For three weeks they will miss their afternoon classes. And then, starting on June 10, the rehearsals will run all day long. The musical opens on June 18 and runs until Sept. 7. They will perform in four shows a week because of the rotating schedule with the other choirs. The musical stars Donny Osmond, who was on hand during the finals March 9 and for many of the girls, it was a thrill to meet him. "I got tohughim,"" said Alison Malcolm. Members of Northern Explosion include Robin Adderley, Nicole Barton, Tammy Boule, Leslie Bradley, Sabrina Chatton, Erin Chellew, Colleen DeKoning, Melinda De- lorme, Bonnie Edwards, Michele Ferland, Eri- ka Goreski, Leanne Holt, Jillian Howsam, Leslie Howsam, Leeann Keeler, Melissa Kroo- nenberg, Alison Malcolm, Erin Malcolm, Heather Malcolm, Ann McClelland, Caitlin McCoy, Holly Patton, Melissa Pereman, Hi- lary Scroggie, and Nicole Skinner.
