Kinsmen Club and Community Care income tax service Trained Community Care volunteers are preparing in- come tax returns again this year. Every year, Revenue Canada Taxation sponsors a communi- ty-based program that provides free tax assistance to people who have difficulty completing their tax returns. The program is designed to respond to the needs of disad- vantaged Canadians, especially the elderly, the disabled, new immigrants and people who have low incomes. Our objective is to help people who cannot af- ford the services of tax consul- tants and who are incapable of completing their tax returns without assistance. Since its in- ception over a decade ago, the Volunteer Program has evolved to meet the unique needs of dif- ferent communities across Can- ada. People from diverse profes- sions and backgrounds get together once a year -- usually in Feb. -- to learn about or re- fresh their knowledge of Cana- da's income tax system in order to help others. Revenue Canada employees organize these get-togethers, or training sessions and provide the groups with tax training Iclping to house Canadians and all the materials a volun- teer needs to prepare a straight- forward tax return. The train- ing reviews the best methods for completing a tax return; highlights any budget changes affocting baxfiloroj and provides on-going support to the volun- teers once the initial training session is completed. As the program sponsor, Rev- enue Canada Taxation plays only a background role in the delivery of this service. The vol- unteers are its lifeblood. Through them the program re- sponds to the needs of less fortu- nate Canadians in their com- munities. Some volunteers make house calls, providing as- sistance to bed-ridden or hospi- talized taxfilers, other volun- teers get together in groups, usually through an association, and run "free tax clinics" for people with low incomes and other taxfilers with special needs. Again this year volunteers from the Kinsmen Club and the community are helping Scugog Community Care provide this service, on March 16, 1992.
