"A Family Tradition for 125 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 17, 1992 - 33 The XL Gas Bar Eaglettes travelled to Paris to test their skills against teams from Southwest region. Our first op- ponent was from Waterloo. The girls, some who stayed over Fri- day and some who came motor- ing in Saturday morning were ready for the challenge. This tournament was using a two minute buzzer system with 16 minute periods, something our girls haven't used before. Melissa Hooker was set up by Miranda Burgess 31 seconds into the game to get Port start- ed on their way. Five minutes later Waterloo tied it up. Leanne Davison gave Port a 2-1 when she was set up by Julia Leaman. Miranda stretched the lead with an unassisted wrist shot over the short goalies head before Waterloo started the come back. For much of the sec- ond period the game was tied 3- 3. With just 2:23 remaining Port got a break! The Waterloo goalie under a great deal of pressure hurried his throw and into the net it went. Julia Lea- man who took the shot was credited with this goal and as- sists went to Nicole Virtue and Leanne Layzell. Miranda fed the ring up to Leanne Davison who put the game on ice, 5-3, with her second of the game. The second game of the round robin was against host Paris. Deadline for Cartwright Ball registration March 31 Cartwright Minor Ball has confirmed that both hardball and softball will be offered in the coming season, and the reg- istration date for team selection purposes is March 31. Players yet to register can do so by pick- ing up registration forms at lo- cal stores and mailing them to the registrar. For the first time in many years, local players will have the opportunity to play baseball {or "hardball" as it is sometimes called) this season, as well as softball. However, teams must be selected and shirts ordered soon, so registrations should be returned before March 31 to fa- cilitate the team selection pro- cess. Late registration involves additional cost for shirts and late fees. The softball program will con- tinue as before, with a regular league schedule, practices and tournament. The baseball pro- gram will be provided on an in- terest basis, for all players at each level. Players will be in- volved in the baseball activities on a pay-as-you-play basis, rather than paying an addition- al fee at the start of the season. In this manner, players who are interested will pay $2 on a per practice/per game basis. Regu- lar practices, exhibition games and tournaments will be includ- ed in the program. Uniforms will remain the property of the league, and the fees will go to- wards the purchase of the equipment required for this new ball program. Baseball will be offered at the Mite {9-10 yr.}, Squirt {11-12 yr.) and Pee Wee {13-14 yr.) lev- els, and perhaps at the Bantam {15-16 yr.) division as well if there is enough interest. The league still provides the opportunity for players to be in- volved in a "Rep" boys Squirt softball team, T-Ball {5-6 yr. and perhaps 4 year olds) and Senior Plus {16-19 yr.}. Howev- er, in order for these options to be available and confirmed, reg- istrations must bein on time. Registration fees for Cart- wright Minor Ball are $35 per player. Thisincludes all regular season softball practices and games, as well as the season- end tournament and awards day. If anyone has any ques- tions, they are encouraged to call Rob at 986-4254 or Ron at 986-6952. Three of these goals were unas- sisted. The only assist on Ju- lia's goals was by Leanne Dav- ison. Notching Port's other goal was Stacey Cunningham. As- sists on Stacey's goal went to Alaina Davis and Melissa. Leading 5-3 with two minutes remaining, there was a mystery rule change. The last two min- utes became stop time. Another odd rule implemented for this tournament was a no substitut- ing except at the two minute buzzer. The end result was a 5-5 tie. It was time to hit the pool and relax knowing a win against Staynor would put Port into the final. On the first shift Leanne Lay- zell was set up by Miranda to open the scoring. The next shift saw Julia score another unas- sisted goal. The third shift had Melissa getting one past the Staynor goalie at the buzzer on a nice set up from Kristin Wall- er. Port seemed to be cruising until Staynor netted two of their own and the "cardiac kids" were at it again. Melissa com- pleted a quick movement up started by Miranda To Stacey to Melissa. On the same shift Me- lissa completed the hat trick with an unassisted marker. Ju- lia picked up her second of the game to stretch the lead to 6-2 with assists going to Leanne Layzell and Sarah Verschuur- en. Leanne Davison scored the last two of the game with one as- sist going to Miranda, the other to Julia. The girls now had to wait through two games to find out who our opponent in the fi- nal would be. Whitby #2 beat Paris to stay in contention and this also knocked the hosts out of their tournament. Waterloo Gold struggled to beat the other Wa- terloo team (white) to advance on the tie breaker ahead of Whitby into the final. XL Gas Bar Eaglettes bring home the gold The final was going to be an- other exciting affair. Melissa got Port started again on the first shift with an unassisted goal. Waterloo was not going to sit down however, and two quick goals gave them the lead. Alaina Davis passed to Stacey who fed Julia and the game was tied up the next shift. Following this Melissa's goal from Miran- da gave the lead back to port. the period ended 4-2 when Julia scored an unassisted marker. Port continued to pour it on. Nicole Virtue from Melissa's set up on the first shift of the sec- ond period. Waterloo attempted a comeback from the 5-2 deficit but the comeback was short- lived. Stacey's goal stretched thelead to 6-3. Melissa complet- ed her second hat trick with Sta- cey picking up the assist. Leanne Layzell notched an un- assisted goal with 2:41 remain- ing and the game seemed to be all but over. Waterloo scored with 2:13 remaining and again at 1:12 and the coaches soon be- came anxious (no substitutions remember). Another goal with 33 seconds by Waterloo closed out the game and the gold med- al belonged to Port. This tournament was a total team effort and those players not making the score sheet de- serve special mention for the ef- fort and determination they put forward. These girls are Amy Weber, Janna Ostafichuk, and Katherine Cooke. Their solid defensive play throughout the tournament improved steadily with each game. Finally a big congratulation to goalie Alicia Burgess who made many out- standing saves at very impor- tant times during games and improved her concentration with each game. The players picked Alicia as captain to re- ceive the championship banner during the awards presenta- tion. Congratulations to every- one (parents included) on an ex- cellent weekend.
