yey Consumers who opt for cheap furnace mainte- nance work this year may be playing with fire, say experts at Ontario's Consumer Ministry. "By hiring the first person who offers to in- spect their furnace, con- sumers can lose more than money. They may compromise their fami- lies safety, too," says John Gerdels, acting di- rector of the ministry's Fuels Safety Branch. A defective or out-of- adjustment heating sys- tem can cause death by carbon-monoxide poison- ing or fire. Because of the dangers, consumers are advised to have their furnaces checked out and cleaned every year by a heating contractor regis- tered with the branch. Registered contractors will inspect the entire heating system and tell the householder about any problems. But let- ting someone who isn't qualified do the work only gives consumers a false sense of security. In one case last winter, a Pickering man was found guilty of conduct- ing home-furnace con- tracting work without be- ing registered with the Fuels Safety Branch. He had telephoned To- ronto-area homeowners and told them their fur- naces were due for in- spection. Then he went to four residences and was paid for work per- formed. In addition to not be- ing registered as a con- tractor, he did not have a valid gas fitter's certifi- cate, as required under the Energy Act to ensure proper and safe inspec- tion and repairs to gas furnaces. "We hope consumers will use caution when hiring contractors for an- nual heating-system in- Don't compromise on heating system spections and repairs this year," says Gerdels. "A good start is to ask friends or fuel suppliers to recommend an expert. If in doubt, consumers should call our branch at {416) 234-6030 to make sure the contractor's reg- istered." Consumers should also find out if the costs of re- pairs that may be re- quired are covered by a service plan or warranty.
