Please recycle this newspaper | Stuffing envelopes for Easter Seals kids By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star More than 80 people turned out at the Kinsmen Hall despite Wednesday night's blizzard to stuff Easter Seals envelopes. Port Perry Rotary Club mem- bers along with members from 1st and 2nd Port Perry Girl Guides and Pathfinders, and 1st Port Perry Scouts prepared 11,600 envelopes for mailing. The Easter Seals envelopes will cover the main part of Scu- gog Township as well as parts of Uxbridge Township. The Ro- tary Club had an additional 1,500 homes added to its area this year. The club is now re- sponsible for mailing to the Old Cartwright Township area, which includes Blackstock, Nes- tleton and Caesarea. The goal of the Port Perry Ro- tary Club this year is to raise $10,000 for Easter Seals chil- dren. Totals in past years have reached as high as $7,000. More than 7,800 Ontario chil- dren are battling physical disa- bilities, some living in Scugog Township. Port Perry Rotary Club cur- rently helps 12 families through the donations to Easter Seals. Easter Seals children face disabilities caused by cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, cys- tic fibrosis and cancer. Donations to the Easter Seals campaign pay for the day to day service of one of 40 Easter Seal nurses as well as helping to send children to a special sum- mer camp. Donations help provide tech- nical aids and devices for chil- dren such as computers, myo electric limbs and voice synthe- sizers. The government does not pay the cost of equipment for chil- dren. An electric wheelchair is $2,000, a set of leg braces is $240 and a non-speaking child's symbol board costs $125. Every spring for the past 49 years, 234 service clubs like the Rotary Club appeal to their communities to help physically disabled children. Uxbridge police now at new location Durham Regional Police 26th Divison, Uxbridge Detachment has moved to its new headquar- ters. As of Monday, March 16 the police station will be at its new location at 20 Bascom Street in Uxbridge. The building is presently oc- cupied by Hydro. The police sta- tionislocated on the lower level.
