Pearce Auction Novice win consolation title The Pearce Auction Novice team completed their season by hosting a tournament this past weekend and picking up the Consolation Chanpionship. Their first game of the morn- ing was against Uxbridge. This was a close battle that saw many Port chances eliminated by good goaltending. Uxbridge went ahead by two goals before Port was able to beat the goal- tender with a goal by Billy Carr assisted by "mini" Adam Moynes and Chris Skerratt. Port tied it up in the third peri- od with a goal from Scott Brownson with assists going to Jason Whitworth and Billy Carr. At the end of regulation time, the score remained 2-2 but Uxbridge was the first to score in sudden-death over- time. East Gwillimbury was our next opposing team and in this game it was the goalies who starred especially our two net minders, Chris Monsma and D'Arcy Stephens. Port Perry was able to hang on in this game to win 1-0. Port's only goal was scored by Mike LeFort assisted by Steven Wygerde. The Consolation final was played against a team from Belleville. In this fast paced game Port dominated the play to win 7-2. Steven Wygerde led the team with a hat trick! He also earned the MVP award. He was assisted on his goals by Mark Blaklef, Braden Tarbot- ton, and Billy Carr. Eaglettes win silver medal at Ajax tourney Fresh from two lopsided wins over teams fromMarkham that netted the XL. Gas Bar Ea- glettes a berth in the league championship game the girls were ready to take on a more se- rious task in the Ajax Silver Ring Tournament. Game one of this double round robin event saw Port up against a house league rep team from Pickering, not the select team as was-anticipated. As vis- itors, the opening free pass went to Eaglettes. Alaina Bur- ger took the free pass and moved the ring to Nicole Virtue 'who set up Melissa Hooker and Port had the lead. Pickering quickly tied the game and the shoot out was on. Stacey Cunningham picked Port's next two goals, both un- assisted efforts, before Picker- ing could respond with one of their own. Julia Leaman netted another unassissted goal for Port prior to Melissa getting her second of the game when she was set up by Leanne Layzell to end the first period. Port's lead was a comfortable 5-2. Miranda Burgess stretched the lead just 19 seconds into the second stanza. Following this Alaina Burger standing in front received a pass from Melissa took a shot that hit the post, bounced straight out, rico- cheted off the goalie's stick and into the net for her first ever goal. At this point a tanned and looking a little car weary, Katherine Cooke arrived back from Florida to bolster a deplet- ed defense corps. Just 11 seconds later after Sa- rah Verschuuren intercepted a wandering free pass Julia had her second of the game. Switching forwards back to defense for the rest of the game netted Pickering three goals in two minutes before Melissa fed Julia for Port's final marker. The final score was 9-6 and the search for another medal was on! ) Game two was against Whit- by #2. The 7:30 a.m. start did not effect the Eaglettes, nor did the International size new ice surface in Ajax. Julia got the team started on route to a 6-1 victory when she was set up by Alaina Davis and Nicole. Stacey Cunningham fed Alaina Burger who set Julia and the lead was 2-0. Leanne Layzell lengthened the lead on an unassisted effort midway through the opening period be- fore Whitby picked up their only goal. Melissa took the resulting free pass and moved the ring to Alaina Burger who found Mi- randa and Port was on the score-sheet again. The period ended with Port ahead 5-1 when Nicole was set up by Me- lissa and Sarah. The only goal ot the second was from the stick of Leanne Davison with the assist going to Julia. Game 3 had Port back against the Pickering team. This game proved to be a show- case for Leanne Layzell. Leanne took a feed from Leanne Davison to set up Melissa to open the scoring. Julia extend- ed the lead before Leanne touched a pot of goals. Leanne Layzell's first goal came off a pass from Leanne Davison. The natural hat trick (her first) was on a three way passing play from Julia to Leanne Davison which Leanne completed with her newly found scoring touch. Melissa increased the lead with an unassisted goal. Melis- sa completed her hat trick on a pass from Alaina Burger. Again goalie Alicia Burgess was looking for that elusive first shut out. Did somebody say "shut out." A lapse in checking in front of our net and a dribbler eluded Alicia for Pickering's only goal. Julia closed out the scoring when she connected on a pass- ing play from Alaina Davis and Nicole. Game 4 against Whitby #2 proved to be the championship game. A tie or win in regular time would give Port their second tournament win in a row. A loss would create a tie in the stand- ings and the tournament chair- person wanted to settle the championship by sudden victo- ry overtime. This solution was to Port's advantage as Whitby would have won the tie breaker. Both coaches agreed to this so- lution before game time and it proved to be a most exciting fi- nal. At the time of writing the game sheet was not received from the tournament chairper- son, thus scorers are unavaila- ble. The final game was an excit- ing match that had the lead change hands three time. With time running down in the sec- ond period Whitby had a two goal lead. Port pressured Whit- by but their larger, slower de- fence was more effective on the smaller ice sheet that had not been flooded before the game. This combination proved to be a distinct disadvantage for the Eaglettes. Whitby's victory pushed the game into overtime. At the start of O.T. the Whitby team got caught with too many men on the ice but Port was unable to finish the game. Both teams had great chances in the first overtime period but neither could end the game and a sec- ond period of O.T. was required. With just over a minute remain- ing, Whitby drifted a high back- hand into the top corner and the XL Gas Bar Eaglettes settled for the silver. In four tournaments this year the XL Gas Bar Eagletes have collected two silver medals and a gold. The only tournament they failed to reach the final in was their own tournament where they were up against 'B' select teams from Ajax and Pickering. The next challenge for this team will be the league champi- onship game against Whitby #1 and the dreaded number 9. Good luck girls, your great ef- fort and excellent spirit are pay- ing high dividends. Advanced Tyke action Port Perry C.A.W. Tykes finally defeated Uxbridge Bruins 2-1. Goals for C.A.W. were scored by Trevor Lance, unassisted and Steven McClennan, assisted by Mike Thompson. Uxbridge's only goal was scored by Jeffrey Ozolins. Great goaltending by Dylan Harper for C.A.W. Great defensive work by Travis Black, Chris Wygerde, Clayton Gilmour, and Wes Langmaid. The team is off to a two-day tour- nament in Orono next weekend.
