How safe is your home? If you're convinced that household accidents only happen to "the other guy," think again. You'd be sur- prised to know how many mishaps -- many of them tragic in proportions -- could have been avoided with just a little foresight and common sense. Every year, many peo- ple -- particularly children and the elderly -- are seri- ously injured, even killed, in their own homes either by falls, burns, scalds, ac- cidental poisoning or elec- trocution. But by taking a little time and precaution now, you can easily pre- vent many of these trage- dies from happening to you or your family. If you're still not con- vinced, take a look around your home and ask your- self some of the following questions. Do you have a planned escape route in case of fire -- and is everyone in your family familiar with it? Do you have a fire extinguish- er readily available, and do all family members know how to use it? Do you have hand rails and non-skid strips or mats in- stalled in your bathtub and shower stall to pre- vent falls? Are your stair- Making your home safer cases well lit? If you have children and pets, are household items like bleach and oven cleaner, kept well out of harm's way? If you answered no to most of these questions, don't panic. There are many simple things you can do. First of all, make sure you have a planned escape route in case of fire. Make sure all members of your family are familiar with it. You can practise fire drills to make sure every- one remembers what they're supposed to do. If you have an elderly per- son living with you, take extra care to make sure you have contingency plans so they can be easily reached and evacuated.
