Daffodil Day Volunteers from the Scugog Cancer Society braved chilling winds last Friday to raise money for Cancer research. Approxi- mately $3,000 was raised during Daffodil Day on April 3. Door- to-door canvassing will take place later this month in hopes of raising more money for cancer research. These four area residents. along with 160 other local volunteers. will be honored during a volunteer awards ceremony jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Citizenship and the Ministry of Culture and Com- munications. The ceremony will be held at The General W. Sikorski Polish Veteran's Association, 1551 Stevenson Road North, Oshawa, on April 9 at 7:30 p.m. This awards ceremony will also pay tribute for the first time to reci- pients of the province's prestigious Outstanding Achievement Award, bestowed annually in recognition of remarkable volunteer service. Organizers received a record number of nominations for these high-profile awards this year, logg- ing close to 200 submissions. "It is incredible that during this difficult economic period, Ontario's volunteers have not wavered in their commitment to our communities. I feel honored and very proud to be able to salute them with these awards," said Elaine Ziemba, Minister of Citizenship. Added Karen Haslam, Minister of Culture and Communications: "Many of Ontario's not-for-profit organizations would find it a real struggle to exist without the support and dedication of these volunteers. In fact, many of these organizations would not have been started at all if it hadn't been for effort put forth by volunteers." The volunteer awards will be presented in 19 communities across Ontario. beginning April 7. There are three types of awards, all of which recognize voluntarism in the arts. heritage conservation, com- munity information centres, public libraries, broadcasting and telecom- munications, multiculturalism, citizenship, the Aboriginal com- munity, race relations and human rights: -- Outstanding Achievement Awards pay tribute to individuals, not-for-profit organizations or businesses who have made an ex- ceptional contribution to their com- munities. Only 15 of these awards are given annually and recipients receive a specially commissioned trophy. -- Volunteer Service Awards honor adult volunteers for five, 10 or 15 consecutive years of service. Pins and certificates in this category will be awarded to close to 3,000 On- tarians this year. -- Youth Awards, a newly-created awards program, salute volunteers 24 years of age or younger who have provided service for at least two years.
