GR ST a i 4 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 7, 1992 " Watch Program to be By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Community Memorial Hospi- tal is about to launch a new pro- gram aimed at making the facil- ity safer and more secure. The Hospital Watch Program is a strategy aimed at reducing crime, improving safety and heightening awareness within the hospital environment. According to Connie Jamie- son, manager of personal servic- es at Community Memorial Hospital, everybody at the hos- pital becomes "the eyes and the y Gold 'n Glow Inc. ears" of the hospital therefore reducing the number of crimes of opportunity. Although Mrs. Jamieson says there is "alow incident of crime" at the Port Perry hospital, there is still a need for such a pro- gram. "We want to tighten up our own security," she says. Much the same as Neighbor- hood Watch, the staff and visi- tors of the hospital are asked to be vigilant while in the hospital. Hospitals are public facilities which see a fair number of visi- 085-8555 Come in for Moving Weel We've Moved! Now Together in One Shop at 139 QUEEN STREET, Port Perry Specials eg CARP launched at hospital tors through the facility at all hours of the day. The staff will be watchful and aware of strangers and will be required to challenge suspicious looking individuals. Mrs. Jamieson says that once an opportunity for crime is re- moved, the chance of it being committed is greatly reduced. Despite Community Memori- al Hospital' 8 low incidence rate, Mrs. Jamieson says the need for such a program is still there. She points to the increasing crime rate at other facilities in the larger urban areas. "We can't deny that Port Perry exists in the rest of the world," she says. While i increasing the security at the hospital, Mrs. Jamieson says it is the aim of the staff not to destroy the atmosphere. "We don't want to take away from the small town hospital feeling," she says. In order to maintain a secure hospital the staff, patients and visitors promote their own se- curity and protect their posses- sions and those of the hospital by becoming more aware of se- curity and safety risks and the steps necessary to prevent these risks from occurring. Education programs will in- troduce the program and pro- vide ideas to the staff. One method to increase the security of the hospital is already being investigated. The administra- tion is investigating security and surveillance systems which will allow the staff to lock the doors at night. The official kick-off for the Hospital Watch Program is April 10 in Whitby, with Com- munity Memorial Hospital's in- troductionon April 13at 10 a.m. Various meetings will be held throughout the week to intro- duce the program. fl FREAD Decor Shoppe 154 Queen Street SEISEE Teoltle!
