"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" ee ---- a AA et el ISDE IO): IVA U Z2 VI Gap J OI Y SI UW iv Living up to his sponsor's motto, "There's nothing halfway about it," Junior Hanley proved once again that he can go all the way as he led the American Canadian Tour Bud 100 from flag to flag at Mosport International Speedway. "The Molson Ex, Quaker State Thunderbird ran solid all week- end," said Hanley. "And the yellow flags gave us a chance to cool off the brakes and tires and that let us stay out in front." Hanley was hard pressed for the entire race, mainly by Oshawa native Randy MacDonald, as well as by former series champion Robbie Crouch and Vermont's Kevin LePage. Unfortunately, for a large number of competitors, it was a tough and damaging race as the 100 lap event was slowed by a total of 11 caution periods that eliminated almost half of the 33 car field. One victim of the tricky Corner One area was the #46 car of Bill Zardo. The Brampton resident took the green flag in 29th spot but, in the Drive of the Day, he worked his way up to the third position before he had a coming together with Robbie Crouch. Both drivers were able to continue, but were relegated to the back of the field and finished sixth and seventh respectively. In the final postings, it was Hanley first, Randy MacDonald second, two car lengths back and Beaver Dragon of Vermont third. Hanley and the ACT Tour return to Mosport Speedway on July 12 to continue the chase for the Budweiser Triple Crown. The Sunday Support Race featured the 800 horsepower Winged Wonders of the ISMA Super Modified Series. Pat Abold from New York was on a three race winning streak entering the fray and by the luck of the draw started the feature on the pole. He held the point for 24 laps until he was overtaken on the backstraight by Stouffville's Gary Morton. The Canadian then spent 10 laps dicing with New Hampshire driver, Mike Ord- way but on a pass for the lead, the two touched wheels sending Morton somersaulting into the spectator fencing. The car was badly torn up, as was the fence but the driver emerged unin- jured. This was the most serious of the six yellow flag incidents. In the seven lap dash to the checkered flag, it was Doug Didero of North Carolina that led the field and claimed the victory. One little side-note: The first driver to exit the race was a young man making only his second appearance at Mosport named Gene Lee Gibson. Although this weekend's result is noth- ing to brag about, Gene Lee is officially in Mosport Speedway's Record Book as having claimed the first ever race victory on the 1/2 mile oval, an accomplishment he made in a USAC Sprint Car when the track first opened three years ago. Better luck next time, Gene Lee. Regular Saturday night racing continues at Mosport Speedway next week with the Erin Maxx Trans-Am scheduled for the Mos- \From Corner Five. port road course on the June 27 and 28 weekend.
