RECYCLE THIS PAPER 5S Spectacular show at Mosport Speedway By Nelson Hudes The American/Canadian Tour (ACT) GM National Stock Car Series and the ISMA Su- permodifieds put on a spectacu- lar show at Mosport Interna- tional Speedway this past weekend. The weather was great, the crowd on a high and the racing intense. The American Canadian Tour Budweiser 100 Race was full of surprises as it saw 11 caution flags throughout the race resulting from numerous spins, crashes and tight racing. In the end, it was Junior Han- ley that commanded the race from start to finish as he led from flag to flag and took home the win. Hanley, from Campbellville, ~ Ontario, driving a Ford Thun- derbird never faltered through- out the entire race. He held off the hard charges and great ef- forts of Oshawa's own Randy MacDonald in the GM Pro Shop Chevrolet Lumina. MacDonald gave it his all in attempting to make a pass and grab the lead but it was not to be, and Randy had to settle for second place at his home track. Third place went to Beaver Dragon from Milton, Vt. in a Pontiac Grand Prix. With two laps to go to the end of the race, two cars crash and the track went yellow. As well, two other cars spun resulting in two restarts on the same lap all because yellow flags did not count in this race. The competi- tors were given 100 full racing laps. The Supermodified co- feature was also full of surpris- es as the 50 lap race also saw some yellow flags as well as two cars coliding and one of them going into the air and taking out a few fence posts in the pro- cess. All of this happens of course with only eight laps left to the checkered flag. Twenty four Supermods took to the grid, but in the end it was Doug Didero from Mooresville capturing the checkered flag and taking home the win. (The Supermods were last here at Mosport International Speed- way last July, 1991, when they were also the co-feature with an ACT race.) Doing some very im- pressive driving and finishing a close second was Mike Ordway of Freemont, NH and trailing behind in third was Pat Abbold of Pennellville, NY. Last year's Mosport winner and fan favor- ite, Gary Morton, unfortunate- ly was involved in the crash near the end of the race. Also fortunately, no one was hurt. The regular Street Stock, Late Model Sportsman, Late Models, and Thundercars were also part of the weekend's en- tertainment as they too dazzled the crowd with their thrilling brand of racing action. In Street Stock, Fred Shep- stone was the big winner in the heats as he took two checkered flags in top spot. The feature was a different story altogether as one of the track favorites, Andy Warbutton of Oshawa, took home the win followed by Ted Nessbett in Car No. 27 and Jeff Zeisner from Oshawa. In the Sportsman division, Neil Fair was the double win- ner of the night taking home a heat as well as the feature event. In second was Joe Beles- key of Stroud and in third was Dave Morgan of Lakefield. In the Late Model division, Dave Taylor held off the hard charges of Tom Milligan from Woodbridge who grabbed sec- ond. In third was Al Thomson of Uxbridge. In the Thundercars division, Ian McKellar of Oshawa was also a double winner of the eve- ning as he grabbed a heat and the feature race checkered flag . Second in the feature was Rob- in McNevin also of Oshawa, and in third was Royce Jones of Fraserville. The regular Saturday night Stock Car racing continues this coming weekend with the Oshawa Times Night, while the American/Canadian Tour and the Supermods return to Mos- port International Speedway July 11-12, 1992 for the Bud Triple Crown 100.
