MPP concerned about tax on cans By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Durham East MPP Gord Mills has called for a moratori- um on a tax placed on beer cans until the fullimpact is assessed. Mr. Mills met with officials from the Ontario Government's Treasury Department on Thursday in what he described as a "hard hitting discussion, with no sort of soft talk." He ex- . pressed his concern over the en- vironmental tax placed on beer cans during last April's budget. The tax amounts to $3.10 on a case of 24 cans. Members of the manufactur- ing community claim the tax is hurting the processing indus- try. Mr. Mills says the impact of the tax "was being misread" in which the government doesn't fully understand the implica- tions of the tax which was meant as an environmental measure. Dan Morris from Whitby's Ball Packaging Products esti- mates orders for beer cans have dropped 80 per cent since the tax was introduced. During the same period the sales of canned beer have dropped 60 per cent. The drop in orders will inevi- tably lead to lay offs in the fu- ture, Mr. Morris predicts. But Mr. Mills called for the moratorium until the full im- pactofthe tax is assessed. "This will give the people an opportunity to return to their Jobs until all aspects of the tax is looked at," he said. Mr. Mills also stressed the ur- gency for a decision. I don't want them (Ball employees) to lose their "jobs overit." Ball employees have been lob- bying hard to have this tax re- scinded. They have met twice with Premier Bob Rae. Although nothing was re- solved during the meeting with Premier Rae, Mr. Morris be- lieves they have made some progress. "We're going in the right di- rection and we're getting posi- tive feedback, but we're a long way from resolving the issue," Mr Morris said. But he stresses time is of the essence. "We can't keep ware- housing products." 4 I PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 30, 1992 - 13 FARMER'S MARKET OPEN EVERY SATURDAY AT 8:00 AM It's BERRY Time!
