34 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 15, 1992 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" By Nelson Hudes Mosport International Speed- way closed its season this week- end (Sept. 13) with a special 100 lap Thundercar Enduro and a 150 lap CASCAR Budweiser Rupr Series event. he weather was sunny, the drivers eager to do their thing and the fans elated as the sea- | son came to a close with this \ special event. The 100 lap or 1 1/2 hour cur- ) fewed race ended up being just rd that. Curfewed at 1 1/2 hours. There was simply no way for the 51 starters who took the green flag to stay out of each others way as it looked more like a demolition derby than it did a race. Cars were crashing into each other all over the place and every time it happened, the red flag came out and all the cars had to stop where they were. In this race, there was no such thing as a yellow flag. In the end, after all the crash- es, spins, hard charges and bumps and grinds, Royce Jones from Fraserville was victorious followed by Mike McCarthy of Waterdown and taking third was Rob Howard of Oshawa. The Budweiser CASCAR SU- PER SERIES 150 lap race ran George and Doreen Jackson of the Oshawa Lawn Bowling Club were the high three game winners of the Mixed Doubles tournament held at the Port Perry Lawn Bowling Club on Sep- tember 10. The guest book was opened again on the SCCA La- bor Day Nationals weekend to welcome to the park Lew MacK- enzie. Or rather, Major-General Lewis W. MacKenzie, the Com- mander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Saraje- vo. The 52-year-old, Nova Scotia born General has seen his ca- reer take him to Germany, Ita- ly, Cyprus, Libya, Vietnam, Egypt and Honduras before his latest assignment in Yugosla- via. General MacKenzie's racing career began in 1976 while he was stationed in Germany. He picked up an old Lotus Elite and had some success running in the European Vintage Racing Series. Upon his return to Can- ada, the General resumed his hobby in a rebuilt MG Midget and over the following five years garnered one Ontario and one Canadian Regional Sedan Championship. In 1988 MacK- enzie switched to open-wheeled cars, running his Formula Ford, whenever his schedule al- lowed, in Nova Scotia, Quebec and Ontario regional events. Sadly for the General, his re- turn to Mosport this past week- end was not a pleasant one as an ill handling car placed him far back in the starting grid and a recurring engine misfire forced him out of the race at two-thirds distance. MacKenzie will have a busy week ahead of him as he tries to ready his Crossle F1600 for his "hometown" Moosehead Grand Prix in Halifax on Sept. 13. So, if you see a man driving a pick- up truck and towing a black and gold Formula Ford heading east at a high rate of speed, don't make him mad. This man has friends in high places. And they all have guns. C CARDS AND A COLLECTING Bittie Jean King The Legends tennis sct, from Netpro in 1991, featured many past greats of the sport in sharp photos with career high- lights ...
