The committee made the deci- sion Monday afternoon and will recommend that council en- dorse its decision at a meeting on September 28. "We need all the help we can get on this," said the hospital's past chairman Ted Griffen, add- ing the new addition would prove beneficial to the commu- nity. Delay of short list angers residents (From page 1) set about the delay. "We have put our lives on hold. We have given up our sum- mer to deal with this, now it is on our heads for two more months," she told the Star. "I feel for people who are try- ing to sell their homes. Their lives are on hold while they wait for this decision." Along list of 17 possible Dur- ham Region sites was an- nounced by the Interim Waste Authority on June 4. The list was to be cut to four to six sites by the end of September. The IWA board of directors announced on September 14 the timetable for the release of the short list of the candidate land- Mr. Griffen said the savings will enable the hospital to meet more of the fiscal demands of the hospital. "If we can have everything we want, it's going to be a facility everybody in the township will be proud of," Mr. Griffen said. Scugog's Clerk Earl Cuddie estimated the cost of the build- ing permit would have been ap- proximately $8,000. All but one of the members of the planning committee present at the meeting voted in favor of endorsing the proposal, with Regional Councillor Yvonne fill sites had been revised. "I understand the IWA wants the opportunity for further study," and revisit the sites if necessary, MPP Mills said. The 1WA release stated the reason for the delay was to allow more time to evaluate large vol- umes of information received through the public consultation process. The IWA expects to release the short list of sites, together with technical reports, appendi- ces and public consultation re- portsin late November. Councillor Carruthers called the delay "the government's failure to live up to its promises. Itis very unfortunate," he said. In an interview following the meeting, Councillor Christie said she opposed the decision because the facility has already received government grant money which includes funds al- located to cover the permit fees. She emphasized however, that her decision was not based on the consideration that the township would be losing $8,000in revenue. The $5.2-million hospital ex- pansion is scheduled to begin in the spring of 1993. Plans call for an additional 20,000 square feet added to the west side of the building. The addition will include re- habilitation, laboratory, health records, radiology, emergency and ambulatory care areas as well as Labor Delivery Postpar- tum rooms. The plans also call for 8,000 square feet of renovations to the existing building. The hospital board had origi- nally planned to call tenders to the project and break ground later this year, but Mr. Griffen said it was now too late in the year to do so. Co-op, plaza owher work out parking By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star The Borelia Co-op and the owner of a plaza on Highway 7A have come to an agreement which will prove benficial to both parties, the plaza owner says. Jim Wood, owner of the strip plaza facing the highway, says a leasing agreement has been reached between the co-op and himself in which land will be leased on the housing co-op's property at the back of the stores. An additional 25 park- ing spaces will be created after an allowance is made to alter the property which includes a fence. The area behind the plaza has been a constant source of com- plaint as plaza customers often park on the co-ops property. In attempting to sell his pro- posal to Scugog's Planning Committee, Mr. Wood said both parties would benefit from the scheme. He said not only would it alleviate parking complaints, but would also "add money to the Borelia coffers." But Ward 2 Councillor Mari- lyn Pearce expressed some con- cern that garbage pick up would be hampered in the tight area behind the plaza. "I just want to make sure we don't enhance the garbage pick up problem," she said. Scugog Council will debate the matter next Monday at its regular meeting. The commit- tee voted to put off making a de- cision until the meetingin order tog them time to investigate th tter first hand.
