This was a strong team effort and what made it all the harder, this team had four ladies return to college. [ed by some outstanding de- fensive play, on a solid five hit- ter by Jackie Dempster, this seemed to be all they needed to goon and win. Both clubs played some great ball, both on defence and of- fence, but sometimes came up empty handed. Then in the fifth inning, Tina Lawvis singled for Oshawa, stole second, then ad- vanced to third base on a short to first base put out, then scored on another short to first out, thus giving Oshawa an early lead 1-0. But great defensive play, by our ladies proceeded to shut down Oshawa the rest of the way. In Scugog Angels' fifth, led by Nancy McConnell's triple after two were out, scored on Ann Gordon's single to nght to tie the game at 1-1, ending the fifth inning. Terry Childs got her second hit, on a double but was left stranded at second base. Then in the bottom of the seventh Joyce Parkinson led off with a single, only to be erased at sec- ond, on Tracy Smith's fielder choice advance to third on Nan- cy McConnell single. I'hen the grand ole girl came through again, slapped a fly ball out to move Smith from third with the winning run to give the Scugog Angels the championship. Even though the club lost four players to school they were still able to come through. This was a trying season, but con- gratulations are in order to all the ladies who helped win this championship. A great 1992 season, now on to 1993. Win series 4-1 Greenbank Gamblers capture Peterborough league fastball crown The Greenbank Gamblers went into Peterborough on Tuesday and Thursday nights last week and behind the solid pitching of Mark Goreski and some impressive long ball hit- ting, defeated Winslow- Gerolamy twice to capture the Peterborough Mens' Fastball Championship by four games to one. It was extremely satisfying to the Greenbank team to win both the league championship and the playoffs as the current season had seen the Gamblers surrounded by various adversi- ties during the year. However in the end, Green- bank regrouped and played ex- cellent ball to take Winslow- Gerolamy four games in a row after dropping game one of the series. Tuesday night saw Green- bank strike for a pair of runs in the first inning as Terry Till led off with a double, was sacrificed to third by Trevor Till and scored on Greg Newell's double to left centre. Brian Till was hit by a pitch and Gary Baker scored Newell with a sharp sin- gle up the middle. As it turned out the two runs would stand up for the win as Mark Goreski scattered seven hits and the Gambler defence was flawless. A key play in this game saw Kevin Terrion lead off the third inning for Winslow-Gerolamy with a single and then attempt to steal second on the next pitch. But Gambler catcher Paul Goreski nailed the speedy Terrion with a perfect strike to shortstop Don Beaton who ap- plied the tag for the out. Thursday night the Green- bank squad came to the game determined to end the series and downed Winslow-Gerolamy by a score of 6-1. Greg Newell belted a home run in the first inning to get the Gamblers started and Brian Till put one out of the park in the second inning for a 2-0 Greenbank lead. In the third inning the Gam- blers bunched hits by Terry Till and Bill Buys, and mixed in with a walk to Greg Newell and an RBI sacrifice fly by Gary Baker to go up 4-0 after three innings. The Peterborough team scored their lone run in the fourth inning on hits by Kevin Terrion and John Harrison but Gary Baker restored the four run lead as he belted the Gam- blers third home run of the game in the sixth, to make the final score 5-1, and Greenbank were the 1992 champions of the Peterborough Mens' Fastball League. Mark Goreski tossed a six hitter at Winslow-Gerolamy and struck out six batters. Greenbank picked up 13 hits off the combined offerings of Glen Crowe and Randy Fife. John Harrison caused Gore- ski the most trouble with a three for three game but the Gamblers were not to be denied in this game. The news was not nearly as good on the weekend as Green- bank travelled to Norwich for the O.A.S.A. Inter "A" Champi- onships. ' With 17 teams in this play down and with the Gamblers having only Mark Goreski to pitch, they knew that the only chance they had was to go unde- feated through the tournament to minimize the number of games they would have to play. The draw gave Greenbank a break by having them play on Friday night and spread out their games but as has hap- pened so often this year, the rains came and washed out the game which was rescheduled as one of four games on Saturday. Saturday morning saw the Gamblers play the host Nor- Turnto Page 26 Men's slo-pitch A division winners The Mariposa Hawks claimed the A Championship in the Men's Lob ball end-of-year tournament held over the weekend.
