4 - PORT PERRY STAR - INTRODUCING THE MOJACKS SPECIAL - Tuesday, October 6, 1992 Club has captured three league championships By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Port Perry MoJacks have met up with some very stiff com- petition on the way to the club's three league championships in the past five years. 1988 League Champions and All-Ontario Finalists The club won its first Central OntarioJunior C League Cham- pionship in the 1987-88 season. The team was also All-Ontario finalists the same year. In the opening round of playoffs the MoJacks defeated Uxbridge then clinched the round robin playoff round, go- ing undefeated. The next opponent for the team in the semi-finals was Lakefield, who the ModJacks swept aside in four straight games. This set up the league cham- pionship against the Wellington Dukes. After losing the first two games of the series the MoJacks came back to win the series in the seventh and deciding game, and the championship, for the first time in the club's 17-year history. No other MoJack team had made it to the league champion- ship, let alone won it. The team's next opponent was the Hanover Barons. This series was close including two overtime wins for the ModJacks. No game ended with more than afour-goal spread. This series also went to the seventh and deciding game, with the MoJacks pulling out a 7-4 victory. This win sent the MoJacks up against the tough Mooretown Flags in the All-Ontario finals. Mooretown won the first three games of the series by 6-3, 8-2, and 3-1 scores. The home club did manage one 5-1 victory before bowing out in the fifth game by a score of 3-2. The MoJacks had to set- tle for the silver medal. 1990 Central League Champions The 1989-90 playoff season 3s exciting from start to fin- ish. After finishing second in the league the MoJacks swept by Ajax four straight in the open- inground. The next two series against Uxbridge and Bowmanville both went the distance. The Modacks claimed the Central Ontario Championship in front of a packed house in Bowmanville. Late heroics gavé the MoJacks a 6-4 dramatic overtime victory. The MoJacks ended their sea- son in the Ontario Junior Cin a disappointing quarter-final se- ries. After defeating the Napan- ee Raiders in the first two games, the team dropped the se- ries four games to two. 1992 Central Ontario League Champions In the 1991-92 season the Mo- Jacks once again won the league championship. In regular season play the MoJacks clinched top spot with a 26-6-2 record. The team went 13 and six in the playoffs. In the first round of playoffs the Lakefield Chiefs provided the opposition for the home club. The MoJacks had little prob- lem in this round, sweeping the Chiefs aside four games straight. The ModJacks took a bye into the league championship finals where they met the Little Brit- ain Merchants in a dramatic se- ries. 1988 Central Ontario League Championship Central Junior C League Convenor Andy McLauchlan presents captain Darren Nesbitt of the Port Perry MoJacks the league championship trophy in 1988. The MoJacks claimed the se- ries four games to one including the final game which was a dou- ble-overtime victory for the home club. This took the team to the All- #17 Left Wing Jim Vernon is one of the returning ModJacks. Vernon, an assistant captain on last year's league championship team is a strong left winger. The 20-year-old Blackstock native played his minor hockey days in Port Perry. He is 6'1" and weighs 195 pounds. Vernon is a left-handed shooter and wears jersey number 17. He said he was attracted to the MoJack organization because it was his hometown team.. Junior C is the highest level of hockey he has played. Vernon was a great #14 Defense Todd Dennis, 18-years- old of Oshawa is another new addition to the MoJack line-up this season. The 5'11", 173-pound defenseman plays both right and left defense. He shoots left-handed and wears sweater number 14. Dennis played minor hockey in Oshawa. He spent last season playing for the Oshawa Rotary 'AA" team. He has also played some "AAA" games. In 60 games fast season Dennis contributed 61 points for his team. He scored 18 goals and added 43 assists. He #7 Right Wing Jan Heyes, another Scugog Township native will be playing right wing for the MoJacks this season. Heyes, 19-years-old, of Blackstock is 5'9" and weighs 180 pounds. He is wearing number 7 and shoots left-handed. He played minor hockey in Port Perry. Last season he was a member of the Port Perry Juvenile team which finished as All- Ontario finalists. Heyes alse played hockey at Cartwright High School. Heyes contributed 46 goals and 60 assists for 106 points as a Juvenile last season. Ontario quarter-finals against Ernestown. He feels the MoJacks have enough talent to make a run for the league championship. "We just have to harness the talent," he said.
