"A Famlly Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 14, 1992 - 5 Fire Chief Ray Gould retires after 33 years By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Ray Gould has retired from his position of Fire Chief after 33 years service to Scugog Township. Fifty-six-year-old Chief Gould retired September 30 as chiefof Scugog Hall # 2. He spent several years as a captain at the hall before as- suming the position of acting chieftwo-and-a-halfyears ago. A fireman since the age of 23, Chief Gould said things at the department have changed over the years. "We have attended more acci- dents than fires in the past few years," he said. Chief Gould attributes the de- crease in fires to public aware- ness. "Chimney and grass fires were the most common fires when 1 first began on the de- partment," he said. Adding, "with fire education being taught in the schools and with more people using smoke detec- tors," the incidents of fire have deceased. He said he joined the fire de- partmentin 1959 because it was a way for him to serve the com- munity. "I really enjoyed my work. I have worked with a lot of good people over the years," Chief Gould said. With the good times come the bad though, as there are times when being a fireman are hard. The incident which sticks out in his mind is a house fire in Caesarea about 15 years ago when two members of the household perished in the fire. "Times like that are very difi- cult. Those were the only two Ray Gould people who ever died in a fire in our area in all the years I was on the department," he said. Drownings are another part of the job which he says are also hard on the men. "I hate attending drownings because you feel so useless," he added. Although Chief Gould said "being a fireman in Scugog 1s getting to be quite a job, the de- partment is as well equipped as any. Chief Gould tdld the Star he was "sorry in a way that he has retired from the department, but notsorry at other times." He was going to retire a few years ago, but stayed on when asked to take over the duties of Chief. "I had lots of fun over the years at the department and I am going to miss the guys," he said.
