RB i rtp wn ----C ETRY " RCE aka a "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" Hall infuriated by lack of concern Mayor disappointed with outcome SS beritesy Saturday, of Queen's Park garbage debate By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Mayor Howard Hall says heis disappointed by the results of a recent garbage debate at Queen's Park. The Opposition Day Motion, brought forward by the Ontario Liberals called on the NDP gov- ernment to table a comprehen- sive waste management strate- A motion read by Liberal leader Lyn McLeod called upon the government to "table aratio- nale, an effective plan complete with regulations, a timetable and clearly set out schedule, which will provide immediate and measurable progress for waste reduction in Ontario. The three-hour debate on Oc- tober 15, was planned by the op- position party to protest the government's refusal to look at alternatives to landfill sites. But Mayor Hall says through- out the debate the government refused to listen to the argu- ments of the other members. Mayor Hall says he was infu- riated by the lack of concern to the whole debate. At one point during the debate there were only nine NDP members, seven Liberals and no Progressive Conservatives present. But when a vote was taken is motion was defeated 54 to 4. He felt due to the importance of the subject there would have been more in attendance during the discussions. "It wasn't handled with the seriousness I thought it should have been," he said. : He feels everybody is taking a lackadaisical attitude towards the subject and this will prove costly in the months ahead. He believes the government is going to pass the controver- sial Bill 143 concerning waste reduction, with no considera- tion to the opposition's sugges- tions. "She's not going to listen to anything else other than land- fill sites," he says. IWA short list will be released by end of November By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star The short list of landfill sites will be released by the end of No- vember, says an official at the Interim Waste Authority. John Steele, Communica- tions Co-ordinator with the IWA, told the Port Perry Star last week the agency was "busi- ly workingon the short list." Mr. Steele said all the site vis- itations were completed and the consultants were in the process of documenting the data. A major part of this phase is the actual site visitations of the private property. According to Mr. Steele 85 per cent of the properties affected in Durham Region have received onsite in- vestigation by the consultants. He says not all of the 69 parcels of land that make up the 17 sites in Durham will have to be looked at however. Mr. Steele said he wasn't ex- pecting as high a figure as 85 per cent for property owners permitting site visitations. Had they not received permission from the owners, the IWA had the power to enter the land un- der the Waste Management Act. It is due to the quality and quantity of the information re- ceived during the public consul- tation process and subsequent visitations that the site release date was pushed back a number of months. (Turn to page 5) Pulling together for everyone. But he says there are alterna- tives such as the willing host op- tion and incineration, which they are refusing to consider. "The jist of the whole motion was that there are alternatives, but it appears Ruth Grier is ig- noring everybody saying the only solution is landfills."
