Port Perry [0] be > @» [0] ~ n oO Durham police wearing blue ribbons in support of their Metro counterparts By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Durham Regional Police have added an accessory to their uni- forms in the form of a blue rib- bon. The local officers are support- ing Metro police's position "in principal," said Terry Ryan of the Durham Region Police Asso- ciation. Metro Police have been pro- testing against the NDP govern- ment and its provincial policy. The Toronto-area police have been protesting on a work-to- rule basis for the better part of the month of October. Metro police are refusing to wear their badges and don the traditional hat. They are cur- rently sporting baseball-style hats. The protest is aimed at the new NDP policy which states police must file a written report each time they draw their guns. The policy forbids an officer to Wilson speaks to club (From page 1) Canada is opening the door to tough times ahead. "Why would we invite volitili- ty to come to Canada with a no vote, which is much more likely than with a yes vote." He stressed the need to end the uncertainty in the country, which in turn would alleviate the upward pressure on the in- terest rates and spur activity in the manufacturing sector. "We don't need that upward pressure on interest rates," he said. "We need to get interest rates down so we can see more housing built, more cars bought and businesses run more efli- ciently." Mr. Wilson said economic pol- icies have been in the works for "upwards of a year" through consultations with various groups and the Prosperity Steering Committee. He said an announcement would be made in two to three weeks. There has been speculation a long-term $26 million roads im- provement plan for the provinc- es was included in the package, but he would not elaborate on the details. "This is something that has Materials stolen from building site Durham Regional Police are investigating the theft of build- ing matenals from a construc- tion site over the weekend. According to Durham Region- al Police, approximately $1,500 worth of lumber was stolen from a building site on Dewvitts Road in Blackstock. It was reported to police on Saturday afternoon. The Metro police are also con- cerned over the ruling in which any racial complaint will be handled by the Civilian Public Complaints Commissioner. Since beginning the protest, Metro officers have cut the num- ber of parking and traffic tickets issued by 90 per cent. Last week Toronto's 1,280 firefighters announced they are supporting the slowdown as did the 1,500 police officers working out of Peel Region. Ontario Pro- vincial Police also recently sig- nalled theirsupport. Mr. Ryan said the Durham Regional Police Service will be holding a membership meeting yesterday (Monday) to decide if they would step up their posi- tion on the protest. Decisions would be made on a specific position for the force and recommendations would be forwarded at that time, Mr. Ryan told the Star. Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc.
