According to Ward 3 Council- lor Ken Gadsden who co- ordinated the contest, approxi- mately 300 designs were sub- mitted for the contest which closed on October 16. "The result has presented us with a difficult problem of find- ing the choices." Councillor Gadsden says council has;narrowed down the selections to a short list and will make a decision shortly. At that point it will also decide whether to accept the winner as is, or make alterations. The winning design will be unveiled at the Peter Perry Gala Ball on November 14. The winner will receive $300 for being the overall winner as well as $100 for winning the cat- egory. STE E] % DMANS PORT PERRY PLAZA, HWY. 7A, PORT PERRY abolish pornographic matenal. "Pornography is not just pho- tographs of nude women any- more. It's violent," said Carol Switzer, a member of the Port Perry chapter of CFD. She says sexually violent ma- terial now represents a major segment of the market. Maga- zines, films and videos showing sexual degradation or bondage have become the predominant proportion of commercially available pornographic materi- al. Citing statistics, Mrs. Switz- er says pornography has be- come an $8-million industry in North America over the last three decades. It is controlled mainly by organized crime and is directly linked to the prostitu- tion and drug trafficking trades. Almost 90 per cent of all sex offenders are heavily involved in pornography and often imi- tate what they've seen in books WRAPs on pornography and videos. It is estimated that one in four girls over the age of 12 will be raped in theirlifetime. "By allowing this material to be sold in our community we are aiding the perpetrators in their attack on the family," Mrs. Switzer says. The Port Perry chapter of CFDis asking Scugog Township Council to adopt a bylaw stating that "no pornographic material shall be displayed in any man- ner or be visible to the public and that it be produced (by the storeclerk)only upon request." The chapter will also ap- proach local store owners to pointout pornographic material in their stores and request them to stop selling the items. "By remaining silent we be- come part of the problem," Mrs. Switzer says. "By speaking out with pen and voice we become partofthe solution."
