Wilson re- garding "Birdie" and my letter of Oct. 27. I appreciate your interest and opinions but as I stated in my original letter none of this would be necessary if this iso- lated incident had been investi- gated properly. I realize now that my choice of words "swift kick" were misleading and un- fortunately the wrong scenario was presented. At no time has Birdie ever been abused. My concern and anger was Jirected at our legal system but now I shall try to enlighten all ANI- MAL LOVERS with the facts: Birdie is six-years-old. As a puppy she was diagnosed with extreme leg problems and ad- vised to be put down. The kids would not accept this and chose to try to have them corrected even though the medical ex- pense would be great. This pro- cedure was not a complete suc- cess, however she now manages very well and obviously isn't in any pain. This is quite evident when you watch her romping and rough-housing with her two young masters, now two and four-years-old. She is just one of the family and neither parent believes in physical punish- ment to child or animal. Now the donut episode; (you're right, I guess the temp- tation was just too great, but in defense of my daughter-in-law, who by the way is a wonderful mother, one can't think of everything while watching two rambunctious toddlers). When she returned to the car and saw what Birdie had done she opened the door and yelled. Birdie, knowing that she had been naughty bolted out of the way, yelping in her "Sara Burn- hart" fashion as my daughter- in-law took a swipe at her. The kids were absolutely shocked when charged with cruelty to animals the following day. When told that Birdie could be taken from them, they knew that it was possible that she would be put down because of her age and leg problems so they fought the system to prove their innocence and keep their dog. This cost $800 in legal fees, plus $300 to the Humane Socie- ty. For the record, I would like you to know that the person who reported this incident to the authorities has two dogs of her own which she left alone for hours at a time, howling their poor hearts out. We didn't com- plain but perhaps someone did and she assumed it was us. | can only guess that this is her excuse for causing this ridicu- lous mess.
