Winter proof Falling leaves and crisp, clear days signify that fall is just about over and winter's just around the corner. It's also a time of year when most Canadi- an homeowners are busy re-fortifying their homes to withstand the inevita- ble onslaught of sleet, snow andice. If youre like most homeowners, you've prob- ably been putting off re- caulking leaky windows and doors and procrasti- nating about checking the insulation levels in your attic. But by doing these things now, you'll save yourself from a lot more trouble later on once a mi- nor problem starts to worsen. You'll also find that it's much easier to handle these chores now, before the snow and ice ar- rive on the scene. If you're not handy, don't be discouraged. You don't have to be a profes- sional contractor to win- ter-proof your home. In fact, most tasks are rela- tively simple and you can do them yourself. Of course, the amount of work you do will really depend on how much you want to increase your comfort and save on your heating bills. As with most projects, it's impor- tant to consider the pay- back period. Those which recoup your initial costs the most quickly are obviously more advantageous, but if you intend to stay in your home for a while, a longer payback period is also ad- ~ vantageous. Also keep in mind that a house which is more energy-efficient (ie: lower heating bills) is generally more attractive to future buyers. Windows and Doors If your home seems drafty, you're probably losing a lost of heat through your windows and doors. It is estimated that the average single family dwelling loses 25 per cent of its heat through air leaks. This can be reduced by either applying new caulking around the perimeter of your windows or adding an extra layer of glazing or weatherstripping. (Turn to page 5).
