With the 462 residential sales in October, sales are only 2.6 per cent behind 1991 figures, compared to 24.9 per cent only six months ago. "This is the fifth month in a row that monthly to- tals for this year's sales have surpassed 1991 to- tals," says ODREB Presi- dent Mark Smith, FRI, PORT PERRY STAR CMR. "Sales for this Sep- tember were 33 per cent higher than this time last year, and with the aver- age price remaining stable at only $144,173 - we're on a roll. The current affordabili- ty of housing, low interest rates, the RRSP Home- buyer's Plan and the 5 per cent DownPayment Plan have all propelled inter- ested purchasers into be- coming homeowners." This trend was evident across Canada as 11 dele- gates of ODREB recently met with other realtors at the Canadian Real Estate Association Conference in Victoria, British Colum- ia. This five-day assembly, attended by about 2,000 real estate professionals, features discussion on current industry issues: environment, education and legislation. "Fall residential sales for Canada as a whole, are up over 40 per cent this year compared to last," says Smith. "Our local market is in line with na- tion-wide totals." Homes sold in Durham Region on average at 95 per cent of their listed price, and took an average ofonly 52 days to do so."
