"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Fourteen red roses, signifying the 14 women engineering students murdered by Marc Lepine on December 6, 1989 in Montreal, were placed in the Scugog Public Library by the Scugog and District Sexual Assault/Rape Crisis Centre as a memorial tribute. The roses were donated at cost by Carolyn Rooke of the Best of Things florist. Additional arrange- ments were also placed in the Catholic, Anglican and Pentecostal churches in Port Perry by the crisis centre. Pictured presenting the roses to children's librarian Linda Baca is Sar- ena Williamson, executive director of the centre, and Kelli Moffatt, community outreach co- ordinator. Should entrepreneurs (those who organize, manage and assume the risk of a busi- ness) be making a profit, Bob Rae's crew is determined to fer- ret them out. Health Minister Francis Lan- kin refuses to meet with the On- tario Home Health Care Associ- ation which has been responsible for supplying about 45 per cent of the government- funded homemaking business in Ontario. The OHHCA fears that she intends to put them out of business. It isn't clear if the thousands of jobs that would be lost will be assumed by the pub- lic sector. Without this blend of public and private services, costs may not be kept in check, since most of the public sector seems to be drowning in red ink and red tape. Housing Minister Evelyn Gigantes continues to push landlords into bankruptcy as she invites non-profit housing sponsors to come forth. (Land- lords are experiencing unpreci- dented vacancy levels and mort- gage money is hard to come by in this declining market). In January, she plans to re- lease a report on new policy di- rections, and yet the govern- ment's task force looking into this issue won't be giving its re- port until spring. Is this to be yet another example of wasted taxpayer's money? Bob Rae claims that our ex- ports will take a hammering un- der free trade. Perhaps, he should focus on making Ontario more competitive and not be foolishly wasting our resources this way. If he feels the need to create jobs, repairs to our infra- structure are long overdue. In these recessionary times, we must feed the hungry, pro- vide clothing and shelter, but not erode free enterprise and destroy initiative, for this is af- ter all a democracy and govern- ment is elected to serve, not sub- vert. Gary C. Jones, Oshawa, Ontario. Identities of men in Star's photograph may be known The identities of the men in last week's Remember When? photo may be known. The photo featured several men gathered around the first Ontario County snow plow which was in front of the Scugog Island Store. The picture was taken February 27, 1939. Everett Prentice, who is pic- tured in the photo (third from left), says the two men to the left are Jack Burnham and Harold Archer. He thinks the man on top of the snow plow may be Bob Brown, while some of the men to the right of him may be Bill Gos- ley, Don Gerrow and Len Hance. Mr. Prentice thinks the pic- ture was taken by Jack Sweet- man.
