ModJack coach resigns former coach Harman By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Out with the new in with the old is the story within the Port Perry MoJack organization as former coach Ken Harman has returned to the helm of the Jun- ior C squad. Brad Ryder, who had been be- hind the bench of the MoJacks since the start of the season, re- signed from his position follow- ing the team's November 29 match-up with the Uxbridge Bruins. "He didn't feel comfortable with the commitment and effort he was getting from the hockey players," MoJack general man- ager Murray Parliament told the Star. "He also has a small family and felt it was more important at this time to spend time with them. He felt it was in the best interest of the team if he stepped aside," he added. Parliament, who was disap- pointed with Ryder's decision said "he is a good hockey coach and a quality person. Anytime anyone vounteers their time and effort and it doesn't work out it is disappointing. I respect his decision and wish him well in the future." Harman, who coached the Port Perry MoJacks for four straight seasons leading the club to two league champion- ships, left his position at the end of the1991-92 season to have gome time to himself. Although Harman said it was a tough decision to come back he is prepared to jump right in. He took over on December 1 and will be with the team for the re- mainderofthis season. Harman was being briefed on the individual talent on the team from MoJacks' assistant coaches Len "Giacalone and Brad Menzies prior to last Tues- day evening's practice. enzies and Giacalone, who both said they were surprised by Ryder's departure, will be re- maining with the team in their present roles. Although both said they were a bit surprised with Ryder's de- cision, both agreed with the rea- sons Ryder gave for resigning. Menzies said the players were not giving Ryder a full effort and were capable of much more. 'Maybe we needed a change to shake the club up though," back behind the bench Giacalone added. Harman said he has seen one MoJack game this year and ad- mits he does not know a lot about this year's club. Aside from the returning Mo- Jacks who Harman will be fa- miliar with, he said he knows a bit about the players who came up from the Midget ranks this year. Cutting down the team's goals against average by con- centrating on strong defense will be Harman's first priority, he told the Star. "I also want to cut down the amount of penalties, and to have a little bit of fun," he add- ed. PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 8, 1992 - 27 Legion Pee Wees bring home gold from Stouffville It was an extremely busy week for the Legion Pee Wee A team, playing five games and winning which were in the Stouffville tournament, which allowed the boys to bring home the gold. e week started off in Ux- bridge last Monday, where the boys romped to a 5-1 victory. Scoring was by Shane Norton, Scott Heffern, Seth.Gray, Kent Johnston and Scott Jeffrey. The set-ups were performed by Dan- ny Lyons, Adam Jones (two), ent, Mike Morden, Danny Robinson and Shane. Friday night saw a visit from Lindsay and this was a sure cure for insomnia, but the guys still managed a slim 4-3 victory. Danny Robinson opened the scoring when Mike Morden dug it out from the corner to Danny standing all alone in front. Then Rob Murphy handed in the second on a power play with help from Daryl McEnaney and Scott Heffern. Mike Morden notched the third while standing (sitting) in front when a rebound came out from Rob's initial shot. Scott Heffern rounded out the scoring with help from Daryl and Rob. Luke Carnaghan handled the goaltending Monday and Kent Johnston on Friday and both boys did excellent jobs. ight hours later, the guys headed through the snow to Stouffville and hit the ice at 7:16 a.m. for the first game against the host team. This was a nail biter all the way as we led 2-0 until Stouffville tied it in two unassisted goals with 4:06 leftin the third and 3:39. Our goals came in the first and second, with Scott Heffern getting the first after help from ay Strickert and Adam Jones, and Rob Murphy getting the second with an assist to Daryl McEnaney. With a tie score we went into overtime and played with an- other man short every two min- utes. In the third O.T., Rob passed out to Scott Jeffrey who blasted a shot home over a sprawled out goalie. Luke Carnaghan handled the goal and kept us in there all the time. The second game at noon was a little easier as we met Aurora and dropped them 5-0. Scoring went to Jay Strickert, Rob Mur- all of them, three of cott Jeffrey, and assists went to Seth Gray, Scott Jeffrey, Da- ryl McEnaney (two) Rob Mur- phy (two), Scott Heffern, Adam and tt H. Si sh : phy (two), Danny Lyons and gS This: set- the stage for the championship at 6 p.m. against Richmond Hill. It looked pretty glumy at first as Richmond Hill took a three goal lead. Danny Robinson and Mike Morden managed to kill off some of our penalties and then on power plays, Seth Gray let two go from the point, which bypassed a screened goalie and put us with- in one. Assists went to Rob, Da- ryl and Mike Heasman. Rob then tied the game on a good wrist shot set up by Daryl and six penalties by Richmond Hill allowed us to carry on with four more unanswered goals by Scott, Scott H., Jay and Shane. The assists went to Danny L. (two), Jay, Scott H. and Shane. The goaltending was shared equally by Kent and Luke and only nine goals were allowed in five games. Three cheers for these two guys. No board meeting was held during this tournament, but a lot of shopping took place at the Stouffville Flea Market, not by the mothers, but by the fathers. The bargains were everywhere, but the steal of the day was Greg's deal on a new pair of gloves for $4 and Lloyd's tomato slicer for $1. Tired and broke, we carried our trophies home and after a d nights sleep, we headed for ort Hope Sunday evening to play a league game and came away with a 6-b squeaker. We jumped into an early three goal lead with goals by Scott H. un- assisted, Shane Norton from Danny Lyons and Colin Laird, and again from Scott H. with as- gists to Jay and Adam Jones, but then the tide started to change as Port Hope notched two and ended the second peri- od 4-2. Rob Murphy then led a rush down right wing and beat their goalie, unassisted, and then Colin Laird passed to Danny Robinson who handed off to Mike Morden at our blue line, and Mike broke loose from their defense and flew in on goal for our sixth. Turnto Page 30 Bobcaygeon defeats ModJacks for club's first win of season By Shawn Bastarache The Port Perry MoJacks host- ed the lowly Bobcaygeon Bul- lets Sunday night, hoping to record win number 13 of the year. On paper, there were just too many reasons why the Mo.Jacks should have come away with the easy victory: Since the resig- nation of head coach Brad Ryd- er, his replacement Ken Har- man had compiled a perfect 2-0 record behind the MoJack bench. In four meetings between the two clubs this season, the Mo- Jacks had outscored the Bullets 47-9. The Bullets, much like other clubs toiling through theirinau- gural campaigns, have strug- gled. Bobcaygeon entered Scu- gog Arena Sunday with a dreadful 0-21-0 record. It seemed the only fitting out- come of a match up like this was a sound thrashing of the Bullets by Harman's club. Unfortunate- ly for Port Perry, that's not how it happened. Nobody told Bobcaygeon they hadn't won a game in 21 out- ings. Nobody told them they had no business coming into the arena of the Central Ontario's third place team and beating them. But that's just what they did. There were no surprises early as the MoJacks controlled much of the play in the opening frame. A two-man advantage gave Port Perry a chance to strike first and at 8:26 Frank Kava- nagh moved up from his blue- line position and beat Bobcay- geon's Chad Van Dan Kavanagh, who pl# the MoJacks last picked up from the "B" club and shoul ed with gon, was Junior Perry. be i Leading 1-0, the Me into some penalty trouble. Bobcaygeon took the opportu- nity to score on the power play and make no mistake - Dwayne VanDenaker's screen shot from the point found its way between the legs of MoJack netminder Phil Bateman and the score was tied. Before the period ended, how- ever, Jim Vernon blasted a shot from the slot that ended up high in the top shelf behind Van Dam to give the MoJacks a 2-1 lead after one. The second was a dif- ferent story as tli Bullets were the only team that mattered. Turnto Page 34 RE AR RE Gar a Tr
