Handi Transit seeking second vehicle for Scugog, Uxbridge By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star An increase in ridership has prompted Handi Transit to re- quest a second vehicle to serve Scugog and Uxbridge. Doug Manuel, general man- ager of Handi Transit Incorpo- rated, says a 10-per cent rise in the number of trips last year makes a second vehicle neces- sary. } The service was to get a new 'vehicle to replace the existing vehicle in 1992, but due to a change in the Ministry of Trans- portation's purchasing criteria, it failed to meet the qualifica- tions. This forced Handi Transit of- ficials to re-submit the applica- tion this year. Once the new vehicle is in place Mr. Manuel is hoping the current vehicle can be-retained to serve as aback-up. "In 1992 there were days in which we were unable to handle all the trip requests. With this in mind we are asking the coun- cils to consider keeping the old van as a back-up unit to assjst on these days and to be availa- ble if the main vehicle has a breakdown," he said. As the municipalities sharein the cost of the service, the ulti- mate decision is in the councils' hands. He expects to get an an- swer from the two municipali- ties in early March once their budgets are complete. But Mr. Manuel says it is something that is very much needed in the two northern mu- nicipalities. In 1992 Handi Transit ser- viced 1,800 calls in the Ux- bridge and Scugog area. This is upfrom 1,600 the previous year. Judging by the trend, Mr. Ma- nuel expects the service'to reach the 2,000 mark this year. Mr. Manuel says he is pleased with this trend. While other are- as of the region, such as Oshawa and Newcastle, are experienc- ing a fall in ridership, he says ridership in the north is "consis- tently rising." He says the vehicle is needed at least one day a week to han- ~dle the increased ridership. He says both the number of people as well as the frequency of the trips has increased to a point where the back-up unit is warranted. A part-time driver from another municipality would be employed to operate the vehicle, He estimates that it would be an additional four to five hours. Mr. Manuel says the public's knowledge of the service as well as the increased reliance on southern medical facilities such as the new dialysis centre has increased the user rate. In the past, there was a threat that the service could be discon- tinued in Scugog or Uxbridge if they didn't feel it was needed. But Mr. Manuel says he has had no indication from the munici- palities that this will happen. "Personally I don't see any in- dication of that happening," he said.
