SN La. "A Family Tradition for 126 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 2, 1993 - 5 Mayor's Task Force formed Bosnian drive now complete to study local development By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Realizing the need for a com- prehensive plan, Scugog has created a committee to study the municipality's future eco- nomic development. The Mayor's Task Force on Economic Development will study the muncipality's plans for the future. It will focus on all areas of economic development including tourism and industry. -The initial committee will consist of council members Ken Gadsden, David Dietlein and Ken Carruthers. Councillor Gadsden will serve as chair- man. The committee was formed on Monday after members of the Planning Committee expressed concern that the municipality had no real economic develop- ment plans for the future. Myles G. O'Riordan Owner/Manager REAGHING OUT Last week I had a gentleman come into the Funeral Home with a concern about the parking downtown, especially when we had a Funeral. - I decided I should investigate first hand to actually see what parking was available. Within a two minute walk from the Funeral Home, there are approximately 150 paved parking spaces behind the Post Office and Brock's Department Store, 60 spaces along Queen Street, 30 spaces along Perry Street (north and south), and 50 at the Township Offices, plus our own off street paved parking lot which will hold 50 cars with a parking attendant on the day of a Funeral. There are more spaces available in the summer because there isn't any snow or snowbanks. As a member of the Downtown B.I.A. and the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, we are able to offer parking in any of these nearly 350 spaces to the people who are visiting our Funeral Home at Queen and Perry Streets. The majority of Funeral Home Visitation is in the evening when most downtown businesses are closed: so there are more than enough available spaces for the largest of Funerals. In the two and a half years I have owned the Funeral Home and in consultation with Mr. Harold Wagg, Grant McDermott, and Art Panabaker, I have yet to find anyone who couldn't find a parking space within a two minute radius of the Funeral Home. In closing, I am proud to say that Downtown Port Perry has excellent parking facilities, more so than most small towns of similar size. Using a recent sportsman show as an example, Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce pointed to the fact that the show was held in Durham Region, but there was no representation from the region. She believes Scugog could benefit from mak- ing presentations at these shows. "We really must sit down and evaluate whether tourism means anything to us," she said. Although various organiza- tions including TADRA and the Region of Durham promote tourism, Councillor Pearce says it is not enough. She says a con- centrated effort on behalf of the Turnto Page 22 Rotary Club Clothing Drive for Bosnia is over and we appre- ciate the response from the Certificates D. J.
