Pineridge Sports Atoms bow out in tourney final who both played their best fensivelines. games of the season during thi Fimval managed to score. On Thursday, Dec. 30, the Pineridge Sports Atom Hockey Club hosted a one day tourna- ment at Scugog Arena. It was a five team tournament using the point system considering the periods won, and the final score. We were up against Uxbridge for the first game of the day. There was no score at the end of the first period as the boys played strong hockey against the neighboring team. Ryan Woods played sharp defensive hockey between the pipes which was to continue throughout the tournament. Uxbridge came out strong in the second period scoring the first goal of the game and win- ning the second period. We split the third period with a goal a piece. Matt McGarry coined his first for the day after receiving an on the mark pass from Gerard Timmers. It was Pineridge Sports ver- sus the Sutton Atoms for the second game. It was total domi- nation for Pineridge as they ap- plied the team effort they have been known to muster. Mike Le- Fort started us off with an on the money shot with a honey pass from Tyler Houthuys. This gave us total points for the first period. Gerard Timmers opened up the second with a skate through and score, and Matt McGarry continued his offense, scoring with assists going to Mike Milli- gan and Mike Dalby. Sutton gcored in the second period, but it wasn't enough to take any points from the home team. Scott Duncan and John Burnett were exceptional on the blue line guarding our goalies Shawn Martin and Ryan Woods tournament. Matt McGarry sent Sutton packing as he rang up two goals, with an unassisted goal, and a buddy effort from winger Mike Wiseman. This gave Matt the hat trick and four for the day. Pineridge pocketed all the points for the game and thus, eliminated Sutton from the tournament. The hard effort paid off for this game and put us in the championship game against a strong team from Elmvale who had beaten both Sutton and Peterborough earli- erin the day. The boys showed an out- standing effort as they played end to end hockey against the strong Elmvale team. It was a good, clean hockey game with only one penalty (too many men). Elmvale opened scoring in the first, but the line of Ryan Haslam scoring from Mike Mil- ligan and Matt McGarry, evenedit up. In the second period, 1t was Ryan Haskam who again scored from a pass from Matt McGar- ry, Elmvale hustled back fight- ing through the lines making it a score of Elmvale 3, Pineridge 2. Mike IeFort evened it up with a beauty goal catching the Elmvale defense sleeping. It was a new game as we fin- ished the second and entered the third as both teams played strongly and battled for control of the game. Trevor Weisflock and Ian Garnett showed hustle, and hockey smarts and Jason Howarth kept us strong as he battled against the Elmvale of- i score Elmvale 4 - Pine- ridge 3. Th as the strongest outing for the boys, and we expect the remainder of the season will show good hockey. It was a great team effort. The boys play Uxbridge "in league play on Thursday, and are entered in the Uxbridge tourney this weekend. Swamp wins "B" division at tournament The Swamp Auto Body team of the Port Perry Bantam House League travelled to Lindsay on Dec. 26 and 27 to participate in a tournament from which they . returned as the B Champions. This was the Swamper's first tournament of the year and they were really up for it as they played a total of four games and went undefeated, winning twice and tying twice. The Swamper's first game of the tournament was against Bob's Esso of Lindsay and they skated to a 5-3 win. Doing the scoring for the SwAmpers were Jay Fletcher fromJamie Sauter and Jeremy Gibson, Big Nick Skerratt from Jeremy Gibson and then Jeremy Gibson scored a natural hat trick, netting the next three goals with assists go- ing to Kris Wootton, Jay Fletch- er, Alex Bedell and Nick Sker- ratt with two. Also playing in this game were Aaron Levy, Lisa Bonser and Kris Wootton who all had to play on defence due to a short- age of players. ' The Swampers second game was against a very talented team out of Peterborough. This was a very entertaining game as well as being very intense. The Swampers went ahead 1-0 as Jay Fletcher got things going with Lisa Bonser and Jeremy Gibson assisting on the play. Peterborough picked up two goals in the second to take a 2-1 lead but the "never say die" Swampers kept the pressure on and tied the game at two apiece on a fine solo effort by Cory Wit- razyk and that was to be the way this one would finish up, tied at 2-2. Doug Short had a good game for the Swampers in net as Peterborough had two or three really big shooters on their team. The Swampers third game of the tournament was against Synergestics from Lindsay. The Swampers needed a win in this game to go to the A Champion- ship and anything less would put them into the B. The Swam- pers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead on goals by Jeremy Gibson from Jamie Sauter and Jay Fletcher, Jamie Sauter on a nice tipin' from an Aaron Levy point shot, then Big Nick Sker- ratt from Lisa Bonser and Jere- my Gibson. The Swampers then had a big letdown as they ran into trou- ble in their own end and by the midway point of the third peri- od, they found themselves los- ing by a 4-3 count. With time running out and their goalie on the bench in favor of the extra attacker, it was Swampers" Cory Witrazyk tying it up with Brennen Arsenault and Aaron Levy assisting on the play. The * tie wasn't enough to put the Swampers into the A final but it did secure a spot in the B fi- nal. The Swampers final oppo- nent of the tournament was Sylvestres from Lindsay. This game was full of end-to-end ac- tion but both goalies were hav- ing extremely good games and the offences just couldn't get one by them. Finally, in the sec- ond period, it was the Swam- pers who got it going, netting two. Firstit was Jeremy Gibson from Kris Wootton and Lisa Bonser, then Jamie Sauter from Nick Skerratt and Noah Dorland. Down by a score of 2- 0, Sylvestres turned up the pressure but Swampers' goalie Doug Short was equal to the task, shutting them down the rest of the way as the Swam- pers went on to take a 2-0 win. The win gave the Swampers the B Championship and all the players were presented| very nice individual trophies the tournament organizers. Swamp goaltender Doug Short was presented 'with an individ- ual goalie award for his efforts, to go along with his Champion- ship trophy. This tournament was a total team effort, as the Swampers played some excel- lent hockey and were able to ad- Just to things as the tourna- ment went on. Well done, Swampers! Key Bar Juveniles lose in tournament final by Paul Wylie On Dec. 29, 1993 the Port Perry Juveniles participated in Uxbridge's home tournament. The first game for the Key-Bar Juvies was against the host team. Before the end of the first period the score was 0-0 when John Ennis was awarded a pen-, alty shot. Unfortunately, after the shot the score was still tied. Minutes later, with some fore- checking by Wylie and Vander- ligt, Darrel Vander Slagt put Port on the board. With just over a minute to play, Port scored their second bf the game - which would turn éut to be all they needed. y Fitzgerald madd a quick pass to the circling Garvock who quickly (urged and sent a beau- tiful cross-iee pass to Ryan Ridgway who moved in over the blue line and blew the shot past the unsuspecting goaltender. In the second period, Ux- bridge managed to break Wil- lett's possible shutout, but the game finally ended in Port's fa- vor 2-1. ' Port's next game was against Mariposa. Although the game was fairly lopsided in scoring, with Port winning 7-2, the game saw some interesting stick- handling by Port's goalie and also an excellent defensive game by Scott Heasman. After crushing one of Mariposa's de- fenders, Desautels received a pass from Ennis. He then walked in to the top of the circle and blew it by the goalie for Port's first goal. Later in the first, Port worked the puck around as if on the poWver play before setting up Heasman at the point, who sent a bullet to the back of the net. Ridgway and Vander Slagt got the assists. Port'a third goal was on the power play with Chad Garvock -. deflecting another shot trom Heasman. Some strong fore- checking by Port resuli d in Wylie passing to Ridgway, who fed the slot. Before the goalie cot .d react, Garvock had picked the top corner. Seconds later, Ryan returned the favor. He walked around the defenceman and 'rather than take a clear shot on the short side, Ridgway threaded the pass to Garvock who was open at the side of the net. Chad made no mistake as he put Port ahead 5-0. Before the end of the second Vander Slagt notched his second of the day, with the assists going to Ennis and Card. Early into the third, Ridgway fot Port's seventh goal, and his ourth point of the game, after one-timing a pass from Desau- tels and Heasman.
