16 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 11,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Snow Flake Festival starts this weekend After months of planning, the Snow Flake Festival is about to become a reality. The four-day event, being held on two consecutive week- ends, begins this Saturday. Events being held each day of the festival include hot air bal- loon rides, and buggy and sleigh rides. Hot drinks and food will also be available at outdoor ven- dors. On the first weekend, the boys and girls of summer will be back at the ball diamonds dur- ing the Black Labels Snowball Tournament (slo-pitch in snow). Anglers can participate in the annual Lions Club Fishing Der- byon Saturday,Jan. 15. Also being held that day will be an ice and snow sculpture ex- hibition. Five ice sculptors will be chipping frozen water into works of art while local students will be packing snow into inter- esting sculptures. GM GOODWRENCH SERVICE PLUS Both Saturday evenings, the Classic Country Music Reunion association will be hosting a dance at the Latcham Centre starting at 8 p.m. On Sunday, Jan. 16, the Port Perry Snowmobile Club and the Cartwright Dynos are hosting a Snowmobile Poker Run. A unique indoor and outdoor fashion show will also be held that day. Inside the Latcham antre will be a show of indoor fashions available at local mer- chants. Outside, the show will feature outer wear such as snowmobile suits and Paula Lishman knit furs. A broomball tournament hosted by the Kinsmen Club at the Ice Palace, a demonstration of figure skating techniques by local skaters, and a hang glider demonstration will also be held ondJanuary 16. The Classic Coun- try Music Reunion will host the event on both Saturday and Sunday from 8-11 a.m. Also, the Kinsmen Club will be hosting Dog Sled Races on both January 22-23. The event is sanctioned by the Siberian Husky Association and about 70 teams from Ontario and the sur- rounding provinces and states are expected to participate. The Community Decathlon will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22. The event, which is being hosted by many local organiza- tions, will feature teams of five members from various commu- nities and streets participating in 10 different challenges. A youth snowball tournament has been planned for Sunday, Jan. 23. Local youth lobball teams will show their skills at the ball diamonds. Also or Sunday is a police offi- cers vs. teens snowball fight. The participants will purchase buckets of pre-made snowballs for the fight. Proceeds will go to alocal charity. The closing ceremonies will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday and will feature a pig roast. The dog sled awards and community de- cathlon prizes will be given out at this time. Also, the winner of the 50/50 draw will be announced. Tickets for the draw will be sold during the festival for $1 at participat- ing retail outlets. With 5,000 tickets available, the lucky win- ner could receive a cool $2,500. Participating merchants will also be selling Snow Flake Fes- tival buttons for $2 and sweat- shirts for $20. Although many of the carnival events are free, people wearing a button will re- ceive discounts at most of the admission events.
