oe a LE BR ra LRA RY i SA "A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 11, 1994 - 35 There was plenty of action at Scugog Arena this past week- end with a total of 20 teams competing in the 4th Annual Country Style Donuts Ringette Tournament. The Shepstone Haulage Petites were playing in a very tight and evenly matched Petite B Division with the oppo- sition coming from Pickering, Oshawa, and Whitby. The Rockette' s first game In- day night against Oshawa turned out to be a back and forth seesaw battle with end-to- end action all game. Oshawa drew first blood on a goal by their big gun, 15, but Port tied it two minutes later on a goal by Stacey Cunningham with Kim- berley Carrique assisting. Number 15 gave Oshawa an- other short-lived lead until Ni- cole Virtue found the corner with Stacey assisting. Next it was 3-2 Oshawa with 14, their second big shooter, getting the goal. But the heavy Haulers had some big guns to shoot with too as Stacey got her second of the game on a nice up-ice feed from Alaina Davis. But 34 sec- onds later, 15 gave Oshawa the lead at 4-3. Our girls never gave up and the hard work paid off three minutes later when Rhea Bax- ter picked up a nice pass from Nicole and slid the ring under the goalie to tie the game at 4-4. But Port got caught on a line change with a couple of injured players and, guess what, there was 15 with a clear cut breaka- way and a goal to give Oshawa their final lead at 5-4. The Port girls tried desperately to tie but time ran out to end an exciting and close game. All the girls played well, despite the lack of ice and practice over the holi- days and our goalie, Jill Pash- ley, put in another solid game between the pipes. The Saturday morning game against Whitby was a must win one in order to stay alive for the final and the team responded with one of their best efforts this season. The first period was end-to-end action with both goalies coming up with big saves, but it was Port getting on . the board first ph Rhea get- ting her second of the tourney with Sarah Verschuuren assist- ing. Whitby tied the game at the start of the second period and with the action so close, everyone knew that the next goal would be a big one. And it was as our girls went ahead with three goals in a five min- ute span. First, it was Sarah taking a pass from Stacey and moving in from her defensive position to sneak one past the goalie. Then, on almost an identical play from the Oshawa game, Stacey took a pass from Alaina just inside the blue line, cut for the net and whoops, there it goes, in the net. Heather Reid also assisted on the goal. Port's fourth goal and eventual win- ner was the result of a fine pass- ing play with Sarah and Kathe- rine Cooke assisting on Nicole's hard low shot to the corner. Whitby would not give up and got two quick goals with just over two minutes left to make it real interesting, to the buzzer. But the Rockettes held off the attack and Jill kicked out any Whitby shots for a super 4-3 win. The third game against Pick- ering on Saturday might would decide who would go to the final on Sunday. Although our girls had played well against Picker ing, they were still looking for their first win against a well balanced and strong skating Pickering team. On a centre ice free-pass, Sarah fed up ice to an open Nicole and she cut for the net and put Port up 1-0. On Port's next goal, Heather, who played a sohd defence all week- end, helped out in the scoring department as well with an as- sist on Leanne Davison's goal, a great individual effort with a Pickering defenceperson all over her. But Pickering, the eventual Tournament champi- ons, responded with four goals in the second period to take the lead, 4-2. With five minutes left, the Rockettes got a little closer with Sarah and Stacey assisting on Nicole's second of the game, and with 2:38 re- maining, we got the equalizer and some short-lived hopes of playing in the final, on [Leanne's second of the game with Rhea getting the assist. A tie would have given Port a berth in the finals but it was not in the cards that day. With Port killing off a penalty, Pick- ering went on the attack with their powerplay and crushed our hopes with 1:01 left to take the lead and advance to the fi- nal. They added an insurance marker to make the final score 6-4. Even though the loss was dis- appointing with a lot of sad fac- es in the dressing room, there were some bright spots over the weekend. The defensive pairs of Sarah with Shannon Warriner and Kimberley with Heather, played well together and are improving with each game. The forwards played their positions well and moved and passed the ring effectively. Not making the scoresheet but putting in a sohd etfort each game and getting some scoring chances were Leanne Layzell and Sheena Christie. And Jill was solid between the pipes all weekend and stopped a lot of rubber that came her way. The girls are getting better with each game and with the Whitby Tournament coming up this weekend, the team is ready for battle and victory. Special thanks to Country Style Donuts for their dedica- tion and continued support as- Tournament sponsor, and to all our sponsors, local merchants, and individuals who helped make this tournament an excit- ing and successful event. Pearce Auction travelled to Cobourg on a stormy Friday night. They came up against the usually tough Cobourg team losing 3-0. Thomas Lee the goalie, had a strong game coming up big on several occasions. Port Perry had some chances of their own with Trevor Lance, Jeff Tarbot- ton and Justin Moffatt having good chances only to be stymied by the strong Cobourg goalie. Spencer Churchill and Michael Thompson were their usual ro- bust selves against the boards. Port Perry held their own in the third period, not allowing Cobourg to take a bigger lead. Petites in Country Style weekend Novice 1 action Dylan Harper and Steven Ma- clLennan worked the corners well and Jeff Simpson, along with Garrett Brown, made some good breakout passes. Mark Duncan made his pres- ence felt with some good play- making to his linemates as did Kevin Robbins. This was a physical game, which seemed to be to Gordon Smith's liking, as he placed a few well-placed hits. Jamieson Smith, who has patrolled the wing the last few games, has been really effective since mov- ing up from the defence. Next action is a weekend tourney in King City. Good Luck, Guys!
