"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" ' & PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 18,1994 - 5 RIDE final statistics show Increase in roadside tests By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Durham Regional Police hope the message they received from the holiday season's RIDE pro- gramis not becominga trend. The message the police were trying to get across this year was "If you drink, don't drive, period." The response the force received was an increase in drinking and driving. Although the number of cars stopped this year was down dra- matically, due to manpower re- quirements, the percentage of roadside screening tests and charges issued to drivers was up. "There has been no real pat- tern toexplainit. They are expe- riencing the same results throughout the Greater Toronto Area," said Sergeant Charlie Green, who oversees the RIDE program. A total of 25,007 cars were stopped in Durham Region be- tween mid November and Janu- ary 7. The number of cars stopped in District 2, which takes in Scu- gog Township, was 6,348 com- pared to 17,469 last year. De- spite the drastic 11,121 decrease in the number of cars stopped in this area, only 67 fewer breath tests were admin- istered. That is the result that concerns Sgt. Green. "I was surprised at the num- ber of roadside tests admin- stered and I'm not happy with that," he said. In Durham Region as a whole 25,007 cars were stopped result- ing in 306 roadside screening tests beingissued. These breath tests resulted in 81 twelve-hour suspensions being handed out. Eleven motorists were subse- quently charged with impaired driving, while 22 were charged with exceeding the .08 legal blood-alcohol limit. Forty-five other charges were laid under the Highway Traffic Act, Liquor Licence Act and Narcotics Control Act, includ- Ing one charge of trafficking In Beaverton. Twenty-one of these charges were laid in the District 2area. In addition to the charges, 497 cautions due to car equip- ment failure and registration problems were also issued. "The program went well, we are Just not pleased with the re- sults. We are there to stop mo- torists, it is just unfortuate that so many were charged. For those in the majority who were not drinking and_drivirg we thank those motorists for their co-operation and patience. We hope that the vast majority in- creases," Sgt. Green told the Star. "We will continue to have spot checks throughout the year, concentrating on holiday week- ends. Hopefully, the charges are a trend that will not continue," he added. J PETER HVIDSTEN / PORT PERRY STAR The Big Brothers/Big Sisters of North Durham received a $981 surprise from the Port Perry IGA store owner Jim Grieve, who presented executive director Patti Goreski the cheque last week.
