Everyone 1s aware that the record of the century low tem- peratures last weekend created havock throughout Southern Ontario. Major power outages were reported as well as school closures on Monday, office shut- downs and watermain rup- tures. Vehicles everywhere were reluctant to co-operate in one form or another, for many of us, I'm sure. We were amongst the many who struggled endlessly with four vehicles in our driveway on Saturday morning. In order to give the other cars boosts, we had to move our small pickup truck onto the curb line of our quiet street. After trying unsuc- cessfully all weekend to start it and move it, we called a local towing company. As we have all read in the news though, the towing companies had been bombarded with distressed call- ers, causing them to be very be- hind schedule. One company re- ported being over 300 calls behind! The weary tow driver said he wouldn't be able to get there until Tuesday some time. Too late! Less than 48 hours after leaving our truck there, we were charged $20 for imped- ing snow removal. We live in a small subdivision in Greenbank on a road that holds four hous- es! We attempted to reason with our bylaw officer explaining we were all in this extreme situa- tion weatherwise. We argued that we were diligently and honestly trying our best to have the vehicle towed - he could ver- ify our claims by contacting the company! His excuse was that if he reconsidered in our case he'd have to do the same for every- one else. asked him what other Port Perry 985-7221 choice we had, but he informed me that's not his concern. Good public relations! All I'm trying to say 1s, could he not have taken the extremely rare conditions into considera- tion and given us all a bit of slack - an extra 12 hours or so - to rectify the situation? If we had been obstructing traffic or impeding snow removal on a major highway for an unreason- able length of time it would be understandable then! It seems to us that the town- | ship seized another opportunity to make some money off the tax- payers again, instead of having a little compassion for our com- munity in a crisis situation. It's not the money that angers us, it's the principle behind it!! Respectfully, Mrs. T. Saulnier, Mr. D.
