"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 25,1994 - 5 Nonquon River accident claims life of family pet By Julia Dempsey Port Perry Star An accident on the Nonquon River that took the life of a fami- ly pet has raised area residents' concerns about the speed of snowmobile trafficon the river. Max, a 100-pound Labrador retriever and St. Bernard mix, was struck and killed by a snow- mobiler on Sunday, Jan. 16. "The river, unfortunately, 1s being used like a super high- way, but the river going through Robinglade Estates is also for the pleasure of many children and people," wrote correspon- dent Diane Cooke in the Sea- grave news last week. "We must all make an effort to encourage anyone we know to be extra cau- tious and slowdown." In the unfortunate accident which claimed Max's life, the owners said they were to blame. "It was our fault. We left him out," said Kate MacDonald of Robinglade Estates. She said the snowmobiler, an out-of-town man, felt very bad about theincident. "He was very nice," Mrs. Mac- Donald said. "He came to the house and stayed with me until my husband Grant returned. We were very lucky he wasn't hurt." The MacDonalds found Max three years ago beside an Oshawa road when he was about three months old. Al- though they contacted the ani- mal cantrol office in Oshawa, no one claimed him and he became partofthe MacDonald family. shoes... outerwear fashions, "He was a good pet, very friendly, and good with the chil- dren." The MacDonalds have a 10-year-old son, seven-year-old daughter, and a 16-month-old son. "We are just very glad it wasn't one of our children (hurt or killed in the accident)," she said. "If they had been out skat- ing on the river, they could have beeninvolved." In a letter to the editor in this edition of the Port Perry Star, Mrs. MacDonald said the river is used for a variety of winter ac- tivities. She stressed the need for all winter enthusiasts to take certain precautions in or- der to prevent another tragedy. jobsOntario program offered in Uxbridge College and government offi- cials are crediting an Ontario government program with put- ting people back to work. _ According to Martin Cooney, a consultant for jobsOntario Training Fund, the skills devel- opment and training program has been successful in Durham Region.
