"A Family Tradition for 127 Years" N PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 1,1994 - 25 Overhead Doors eliminate Uxbridge in three straight On Tuesday, Jan. 25, the Scu- gog Overhead Doors Peewee "B" hockey club played host to the Uxbridge Bruins in game three of the best of five playoffs. Port Perry was carrying a command- ing two games to zero lead in the series and Uxbridge was facing elimination: Just 40 sec- onds into the game, Blayne Kin- nunen hit Travis Pickard flying into the Uxbridge zone, over to Alex Wordley and 'hello,Dolly' Port has a 1-0 lead. At 9:53, Brad Johnston stepped into an Uxbridge winger and the beast put him on the seat of his pants, took control of the puck and was in all alone on the Uxbridge goaltender and only a good skate save kept Port from tak- ing a 2-0 lead. At 8:43 the Port Perry captain got thumped over ~ near the penalty box but put a good pass over to Justin Shee- hey just before taking the hit and sent Sheehey and Sander- son in on a good scoring oppor- tunity. Port was being hemmed in their own end at 8:18 but Chris Jones made a good shift to get loose in the corner and dumped the puck out and down the ice. Brad Johnston was forecheck- ing deep in the Uxbridge zone with Nick Pelyk looking for a loose puck when they found one and Johnston, Pelyk and Camp- bell threw a hail of rubber at the Uxbridge goalie. While playing short-handed at 6:17, Nick Pe- lyk stole the puck at centre, wheeled and hit Brad Johnston flying up the middle and he split the defence but lost control at the doorstep of the Uxbridge net. Scott Sanderson was in deep in the Uxbridge zone and did some nice stick handling to give Dave a chance to tee it up and let one go. Alex Wordley was stick han- dling well in the Uxbridge zone at 3:06, over to Travis Pickard and 'oh what a save' the Ux- bridge goalie made to keep the score 1-0 for Port Perry. The game was starting to get rough. The Port Perry goalie was play- ing well and shutting the door on Uxbridge. Port was turning up the heat a touch and apply: ing lots of pressure. Nick Pelyk came into the Uxbridge zone on a one-on-two and slapped a hard one just over the far cor- ner. At 1:51, Port was turning up the heat and took a 2-0 lead when Travis Pickard waltzed right in on the Uxbridge goalie untouched and slammed it home. At 0:28, David Gainey, Scott Sanderson and Justin (Cat) Sheehey swooped into the Uxbridge end and executed a nice passing play that came oh so close. At the end of the sec- ond period, the scoreboard read 2-0 for Port. David Gainey started the sec- ond period off fast for Port Perry when Scott Sanderson tound a loose puck at centre and sent Gainey in all alone on the Uxbridge goaltender and he got stoned at 14:02. Justin Sheehey made a nice move on an Uxbridge winger and poked the puck past him giving Scott Sanderson a chance to test the Uxbridge goalie but got shut down also. Port was playing good heads-up hockey and forc- ing Uxbridge to make some big turnovers and give the Port Perry boys some golden oppor- tunities. The blueliners were playing tough with Ryan McQuade, Ryan Moynes, Chris Jones, Jeff Neal and Aaron Chambers all taking care of business in front and playing well in front of Corey Branton. Port ran into a few penalties but worked their way out of it. There wasn't any scoring in the second period as both clubs were playing well but both de- fences were playing better. Twenty-eight seconds into the third period, Travis Pickard hit the speedy Blayne Kinnu- nen with a nice pass at the Ux- bridge blue line and Blayne made a nice move on the de- fenceman, over to Alex Wordley who fired it upstairs just under the crossbar to give Port a 3-0 lead. An Uxbridge player tried to run Scott Sanderson through the boards but Aaron Cham- bers made a good hit to solve that problem. Brad Johnston, Deryk Campbell and Nick Pe- lyk were really flying in the third period and creating some nice passing plays. Ryan McQuade was playing his usual steady game on defence and found a stray Uxbridge pass coming out of their zone and sent David Gainey and Scott - Sanderson in on the Uxbridge net and Gainey fed a soft pass to Sanderson and upstairs she goes to give Port a 4-0 lead. Ux- bridge got on the board at 8:31 when they scored a power-play Turn to Page 29 Two first year curlers were part of the winning team at the Pineridge Sports Bonspiel held last Saturday night at the Port Perry Curling Club. Techstar Bantams up two games in series with Uxbridge By Greg Heasman Well folks, game two of this Port Perry - Uxbridge series was another fine example of the calibre of hockey these boys are capable of. Port came out flying in the first period with Matt Phillips opening the scoring with a little help from his friends, Todd Par- ry and Brad Shanley. Two min- utes later, Robert Gracie poked in the puck after being fed by Matt Phillips and Shane Nor- ton. Before the period was over Matt Blowe put Port ahead 3-0 assisted by Aaron Levy who by the way has done an exception- al job since being called up from the farm team to help out "Ja- mieson's Follies." Keep up the good work Aaron. The second period saw Port sew up game two with four more goals. Matt Phillips picked up his second goal of the night after Snortin Norton and Mikey Heasman set him up. Shortly thereafter Matt Phillips re- turned the favor to the Nort and helped Shane score his first of three goals in this game. Brad Shanley picked up assist num- ber two for the night on that goal. Matt Phillips then picked up a hat trick by notching his third making it 6-0 for Port, un- assisted. With less than a min- ute left in the second period, the one guy who plays heads up hockey game after game, Todd Parry, left his mark on the Ux- bridge goalie, assisted by Shane Norton. The third period belonged to Shane Norton as he scored number two and number three to complete his hat trick for the night assisted by Matt Phillips. The final goal came when cap- tain Todd Parry and Matt - Blowe moved the puck to Trevor Smith who made no mistake and that made for a 10-0 game. Congratulations to "Leroy" Babcock for getting the shutout for Port. Port now leads this best of five game series two games to none. Game three goes at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2 in Port Perry. Come on out and support this great hockey team. See you there! Bantams to meet Bradford in first round of playoffs On Jan. 24, the Country Style Bantams played host to Ajax. We came out flying with lots of bone-crunching bodychecks. Mike Morden found the mark first, putting the puck into the net while the Ajax goaltender ran around like a drunken fool. T.C. Chambers assisted. Cham- bers and Morden weren't done yet. Mike then scored our sec- ond goal of the night absolutely humming the puck past the goaltender's ear and into the top corner. Beauty! T.C. and Ja- son Logan picked up the assists on this goal. Kevin Hobbs then walked in and...c'est le but!! He blistered a shot through the sieve and into the mesh. It had to be re- enforced after this one, baby. At the end of the first period, it was Port Perry 3, Ajax 2. In the second, both teams came out even scoring one goal a piece. Kevin Gray showed some "Charlie Hustle" and jet- ted the cylinder top corner, once again. I think Blades let a smile sneak out after this one. Going into the third period of play, it was Port Perry 4 and Ajax 3. [ee was dancing like a sea mon- key, he was so happy. We kept up the great work in the final period scoring three goals to Ajax's two. Heffern de- cided that he wanted to add to his collection of goals so he went all the way. Assists to Adam Hunter and Tim Fitzpatrick. Kevin Gray electrified the enor- mous crowd of 24 with a wicked slapshot that would stop for nothing except for Artus Irbe's helmet. Our next goal was on the power play, scored by de- fenceman Mark Brownson. He rifled the puck from just inside the line that is blue. Hunter and Fitzpatrick picked up another assist each. Rob Murphy scored our final goal on an empty net, perfectly shooting the puck through the air and back down neatly inside the corner of the net. The final score was Port Perry 7 Ajax 5. After this one, it appeared as though Todd and Lee were dancing in jello. What a game! This Friday night at 7:30 p.m., playoffs start against Bradford.
