Local economy benefits from $1 million economic injection From page 1 bined with contributions from municipalities, school boards and post-secondary institu- tions. The agreement is a shared- cost program designed primari- ly to meet local infrastructure needs and priorities. Local officials greeted the an- nouncement with pleasure, not- ing the money will be put to good use. "From Scugog's standpoint, this money will give us the op- portunity to do something we wouldn't have normally done," said Mayor Howard Hall. The mayor said the township will make good use of the "33- cent dollars." \You can't say no to 33-cent doNars. I can't stress that enough," he said. A special caucus meeting for Scugog council was planned for today (February 1) to formulate a strategy for the money. Al- though a number of projects are being considered, no firm deci- sions have been made. Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce, who also serves on the Parks and Recreation Commit- tee, said thereis an obvious area SAVE 0% on all our "cruise & new spring fashions! "Roads projects will probably have the front line on money," she said. Among the top priorities are improvements to Queen Street from Cochrane Street to High- way 7A, the completion of the downtown PRIDE project, in- cluding Mary Street, and the improvement of a number of streets in Caesarea. Other pro- jects will also be debated during the meeting. The expansion of the water treatment facility will most likely fall under the jurisdiction of the Region of Durham. "This is beneficial to the Township of Scugog," Council- lor Pearce said of the program. "These are projects which may never have gotten done if this money hadn"tcomein." Although it is certain where the federal and provincial mon- ey 1s coming from, it is not known how the township will fundits share. According to Mayor Hall, the township could fund the pro- jects through a reserve fund, from taxes or a combination of the two, but he stressed deben- turing was not an option. . It appears a combination of the two scenarios seems to be the desired option, according to Mayor Hall. "Raising taxes I don't think is the way to go." "If we work very diligently and council works hard on this, I think we can do something without raising taxes," he said. Though trying not to look a gift horse in the mouth, some Break-in It is uncertain whether van- dals, who broke into a local lum- ber yard, made off with any goods. According to Durham Region- al Police, thieves gained access to Lake Scugog Lumber on Jan- uary 27 by removing a pane of glass from a rear storage door leading to the interior of the business. It is uncertain, however, if they took anythingin the break- in. Poxt Perry AUTO SALES Used township officials expressed concern with the program, won- dering if we would pay for thein- itiative in the years ahead. Mayor Hall questioned whether "this the right way to go" wondering where the funds would be found. Nonetheless, he said it is ben- eficial from a local standpoint as a number of economic spin-offs will be realized as jobs are creat- edin the area. "It will create, in all probabil- ity, a lot more than $6 billion," he said of the program. Durham MP Alex Shepherd echoed the sentiments of the mayor noting that approximate- ly 50 jobs, not including spin- offs, would be created under the program. He said the aim of the project was to ensure that these jobs go to local workers, as well. "The residents should react positively (to the announce- ment),"" he said. "The money will be used as much as possible in the municipality. Mr. Shepherd said local pro- jects could begin this spring.
