"A Family Tradition for 128 Years' PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 8, 1994 - 35 Brantford from March 6-10. Greenwood, lead, Louise Haugen, vice skip, Jan Towns, skip and Gale Ballard, 2nd, won the right to advance by winning the B division of Zone 5. If they are successful this week, they will than advance to the Intermediate Curling Finals being held In ModJacks win two in overtime to lead series with Lakefield 2-0 by Shawn Bastarache The Port Perry ModJacks took an early lead in the first round of OHA Junior C Central Diwvi- sion playoff action taking a 2-0 series lead. Saturday night they downed the Lakefield Chiefs 7-6 at Scu- gog Arena, and Sunday 4-3 in double overtime. During Saturday night's ac- tion Todd Dennis' third goal of the night just 30 seconds into overtime gave the ModJacks a 1- 0 lead in the best-of-seven se- ries and, perhaps more impor- tantly, mementum heading into games two and three in Lake- field. "We really didn't want to go there (Lakefield) for two games in a row being down a game," said a relieved ModJack head coach Brad Menzies after Sat- urday's win. A win that was in jeopardy for much of the first and second periods as the Chiefs outhustled Port Perry and enjoyed a 5-1 lead until the mid-point of the second period when the MoJacks decided they wouldn't give up home-ice ad- vantage by losing game one. Whether it was nerves or a nine day stretch without a game, Menzies' club came out stale. After the teams traded goals early, MoJack netminder Shawn Larocque allowed two goals on shots that should have been stopped. Both Randy De- carlo and Paddy MacDonald scored on long shots, each of which found their way through Larocque's pads for what could be called 'soft' goals. It was at this point that Menzies pulled Todd Dennis Larocque in favor of James Pat. terson. Larocque apparently got the message his coach was trying to send and came back strong when he returned to the net part way through the sec- ond. "I don't think Shawn was really into the game in the be- ginning but he played really well in the third period," said Menzies, whose team is without its number one goaltender Rick Hutchinson, still nursing a bad shoulder. With a 3-1 lead, Lakefield en- tered the second period intent on closing the ModJdacks out. Goals by Al Medhurst and Chris Longfield gave the Chiefs a 5-1 lead and, with almost 30 min- utes gone, what looked at the time like an important victory on the road. What they failed to realize, however, was that the MoJacks had decided it was time to wake up and get in the game. With Larocque back in the net, Port Perry captain and 1993-94 league scoring champ Clair Cor- msh went to work, sparking his team with a goal at 13:11 of the Tum to Page 41 Key-Bar Juveniles in tough playoff series with Uxbridge For many years Port Perry and Uxbridge have met in the first round of playoffs, and this year was no different. On Jan. 31, Port travelled to their ar- chrivals' arena to open a poten- tially long series. Brendan Hef- fernan put Uxbridge on the board first, after jumping on a bad bounce, which fooled Port's goaltender. Minutes later, Port responded when Ridgway and McEnaney maintained control of the puck as they crossed over into the opposition's territory. As soon as Vander Slagt moved into the zone, he received the puck on his back hand, turned, and sent a floater towards the net; through some traffic. It wasn't a pretty goal, but it counted. Uxbridge regained the lead shortly into the second, when Johnston and Zeller inter- cepted a bad cross-ice pass by Port's defence, and Darren walked in on a breakaway and put it past Willetts. Port tied the game up once again, when Darrell Vanderligt carried the puck just inside Uxbyxidge's blue line and popped" one past Shawn Wilson's' glove. Al- though the first game of the se- ries ended in a 242 tie, the game was filled with many large hits and few penalties. The second match was hosted on Thursday night by Port. "While Uxbridge changed their goaltender, going with Shanon Tindall, Port stuck with Matt Willetts. The first period saw both teams exchange a goal. Port opened the scoring when Vander Slagt pinched in for a one-timer, being fed by Ridg- way. Tindall made the stop, but Garvock .found the five-hole with the rebound. Darrin Zeller capitalized and tied the game up, after a breakdown by Port's defence. Lunney and Perry got the assists. As the second peri- od came to a close, Matt Willetts made some large saves - one be- ing a breakaway. Perhaps this would spark the Port's offence for the upcoming third. Howev- er, neither team came out flying after the break. The game re- mained 1-1 until only three minutes left. Denny James picked up a loose puck and fed Johnston, who slipped behind Port's defence. Darren scored the winning goal on a breaka- way. The first two games saw both teams' goaltenders have excel- lent games, while everyone else played some average hockey. Most of Uxbridge's goals were the result of sloppy play on be- half of Port's defence. Half of Uxbridge's goals were on break- aways. If Port plans on playing hockey any further than the first round, they are going to have to play a lot smarter on de- - fence, as well as take some risks on offence. Port will host Uxbridge again this Thursday night. It was good to see the crowd of fans who turned out for Port's first home-playoff game. Curlers Advance To Regional Finals | Do ormen pl ay Port Perry Curling Club is being represented this week at the Regional Curling Finals behind held at the Weston Golf and Country Club. The curlers, from left, Sandy their hearts out in Belleville On Friday afternoon Feb. 4, the Overhead Doors travelled down the 401 to participate in the 32nd Annual Shriner's Pee- wee "A" Hockey Tournament. Alex Wordley scored his sec- ond goal from Travis Pickard and Blayne Kinnunen (Smurf) at 11:44. David Gainey scored at 7:26 from Justin Sheehey. Deryk Campbell scored at 6:21 from Nick Pelyk and Aaron Chambers. Playing in goal and seeing 20 shots was Michael MacLennan. In the second game, Port Perry and Lindsay tied 1-1. In the first period, the big Lindsay team threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Port Perry goal but Corey Branton put on quite a show, stopping all 20 shots and making the first peri- od scoreless. Both teams were playing well and playing end- to-end hockey. The second peri- od was also scoreless. Port Perry opened the scorine at 13:53 when Brad Johnston scored, assisted by Nick Pelyk and Jeff Neal to give Port at 1-0 lead. Both clubs were playing well until Lindsay tied the game with two seconds remain- ing. Playing in goal for Port was Corey Branton seeing 45 shots. Game three saw Port Perry putting Belleville out of the tournament with a 5-3 victory.
