"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 8, 1994 - 41 MoJacks win in overtime From Page 35 second stanza. Cornish cut across the goal mouth from the right side and, with a Lakefield defender rid- ing piggyback, patiently waited for Chief goalie Dan Dupuis to go down before sliding the puck into the corner. The goal cut the Chiefs' lead to 5-2 and was the first of five unanswered goals by the Mo- Jacks. Dennis collected his first of three goals at 19:11 of the sec- ond period to pull the MoJacks within two after 40 minutes. With Port Perry on the power- play, Cornish's point shot was stopped by Dupuis, but the re- bound was easy pickings for Dennis parked in front of the Lakefield net. A major penalty to the Chiefs in the final minutes of the sec- Jason Cochrane ond gave Port Perry a power- play to enter the third and they wasted no time capitalizing. Steve Staniland scored at 1:26 before Dennis tied the score at five with his second of the night just 32 seconds later. With Lakefield still short- handed, Port Perry's Kevin 'McDonald muscled his way to the net and beat Dupuis through the legs to give the Mo- Jacks their first lead of the game. The lead lasted until 13:20 when Medhurst scored a power- play marker to tie the score at six and set the stage for Dennis' overtime heroics. Thanks to a Lakefield double- minor penalty for spearing late in the third period, Port Perry carried a man-advantage situa- tion into extra time. Just eight seconds after Cornish had hit the post and only 30 seconds into the overtime period, Den- nis fired a slapshot from the point, beating Chiefs' Brent Halliday who had replaced Du- puisin goal in the third period. Dennis, whose primary func- tion is as a power forward, was happy to be able to help his team after a very slow start in game one of the playoffs. . "After the second period we were pumped and we knew we i Hed Tyke hockey players, aged five to seven years old, took to the ice at Scugog Arena Saturday afternoon for some hockey could win it," said Dennis who received some prophetic advice from coach Menzies prior to the game Saturday night. "He told me to start shooting the puck more," Dennis said. "I got the pass and there was no one around me so when (Halli- day) gave me the corner I took it." Menzies strategy going into the series against the Chiefs is a relatively simple one - take the body. "As long as we're hitting, we're okay," said Menzies. Better than okay when you consider the vulnerability of the Lakefield squad. Having suf- fered some key injuries late in the regular season, the Chiefs are somewhat short staffed and consequently are prone to fa- tigue late in the game. Menzies wants his club to play a physical style so as to exploit the Chiefs' manpower problem. "Brad told us to bang (Lake- field) and when we did they started to get tired," said Port Perry forward Steve Laird, who collected three assists Saturday night and drew the spearing penalty that gave his club the powerplay heading into over- time. Jason Cochrane algo had a strong night with a go d two assists, as well as some¥key hits. oe ok ok On Sunday night in Lakefield the Modacks needed double overtime to defeat the Chiefs 4- 3 and take a 2-O series lead. Steve Staniland and Todd Dennis gave the ModJacks a 2-0 lead midway through the sec- ond period, after a scoreless first. Dennis, Gavin Cochrane and Shannon Todd each picked up one assist on the goals. The Chiefs' Denny Watson scored to cut the lead to 2-1 be- fore Clair Cornish got one back for the MoJacks, unassisted. Watson replied again for Lakefield making the score 3-2 for the ModJdacks heading into the third period. Lakefield scored the lone goal of the third period to tie the game at 3-3 which remained at the end of regulation time. After a scoreless first over- time period, Jason Cochrane scored on a pass from Brad Moase to win the game and take a 2-0 series lead in the best of seven series. Game three of the series goes tonight (Feb. 8), in Lakefield be- fore returning to Port Perry the next night for game four. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Games five through seven, if necessary, will be in Port Perry on Feb. 11 at 8:30 p.m.; Lake- field on Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. and Feb. 13 in Port Perry at 8 p.m. basics. Her concen- tration to the game was total. Our forwards took care of the other part of the game, scoring goals! Jen Donnelly opened the scoring with a wicked backhand shot after taking a dead on pass from Giselle. Amelie and Mary teamed up for the next marker. Amelie fed a strong héads up pass to Mary who broke through Pickering's defense and fired the ring past the net- minder. Amy set Port's next goal up when she made a great pass to Giselle who made a nifty pass to Melissa who fired a blis- tering shot past the Pickering goalie. Giselle again was in on the play when she took a great pass from Leanne who relayed the ring to Jen D. who scored her second of the game. Our last goal came after Jen J. made a spot on pass to Leanne who was in full flight, powering her way through the Pickering defense to score. from the lanes Aldred 202, Linda Marsh 241, Ilean Pugh 226, Leslie Knight 208. : Thursday Night Mens Team Standings: Legion 29, Philp Pontiac 27, Emmerson In- surance 21, Paul Dick Contract- ing 21, Dowsons 19, 1.G.A. 17, Causeway Live Bait 16, Centen- nial Lanes 16, Brian's Towing 9.
