J RR a a { | | | <i INGER, PA 0a To A Sp On, si FT 4 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 8,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Scugog won't be sharing in Durham's $23.5 M windfall Scugog will not benefit from the region's portion of a federal/ provincial program. Last week, Durham Region was awarded $23.5 million as its share of the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Works agree- ment. This initiative was part of the Liberal government's $6-billion plan introduced during the fall election. Federal and provincial gov- ernments will contribute a por- tion of the money, with the indi- vidual regional and municipal governments kicking in another one-third. According to John Aker, Chairman of the Works Com- mittee, the projects include a $7-million reconstruction pro- ject on Thornton Road in Oshawa, a $6-million addition to police headquarters Oshawa, and sewage treatment plants in Clarington and Bea- verton. Councillor Aker said the re- gion's portion of the money will come from a reserve fund. It has more than $147 million in re- serve. "We are in an excellent posi- tion to take advantage of this program," Councillor Aker said. "We want to take advantage of every cent." Under the terms of the agree- ment, these projects must be 35 per cent completed by March, 1995 and 85 per cent completed by March, 1996. "This means that we must move quickly on this," he said. And move quickly is just what they have in mind. Councillor Aker called on mu- nicipalities to submit their wish lists as soon as possible. "If we delay in any way we will get hurt," he said. "We want to get these projects early to the appropriate bodies." Despite the winfall of more than $23 million to the region, Scugog will not see any portion of this money. Scugog council had hoped to include a sewage treatment plant on its wish list, but Coun- cillor Aker said it did not qualify as it would not be ready for con- struction in time. But all is not lost for Scugog. The region would pay for the cost of municipal services if it is included in a municipal roads project. Councillor Aker said Scugog's planned upgrades to a portion of Queen Street would be eligible for this money. Shepherd takes part in changes to GST From page 1 goes toward the administration of the tax, noting this is proof the tax is "an inefficient tax to collect." Despite its unpopularity, a GST-like tax will scrapped. It will see radical changes, however. Mr. Shepherd, noted that a tax was important for the cof- fers of the country as it gener- ates more than $19 billion per year. "Nobody likes taxes, but I think the best we can do is streamline it and get people ad- Jjusted to it," he said. not bo SHEILA'S HAIRSTYLING Pamper Your Valentine Hair ~ Facial Waxing ~ Manicures Noting that "it's very clear that people want the GST changed," Mr. Shepherd said there are a number of alterna- tives.
