Peewee house league teams enter On Friday, March 4, the Pee- wee House League played its last games before the start of playoffs and what a way to end the regular season. In the first game, Big V and Emiel's squared off. This game was good end-to-end play with both goaltenders playing excellent hockey. Ryan Fraser for the Big V team and Jon Chambers for the Emiel's team came up with probably their best games to date this season. At the 6:15 mark of the first period, Adam Kingsma took a nice shot from the point on a pass from Ken El- lis and put the puck over Jon's left shoulder. This put Big V out in front 1-0. There was no fur- ther scoring in the first period, however, there were many good scoring chances. Ben Russell played good position and fore- checked well for the Emiel's team. Paul Brain had a good scoring opportunity but was stopped by Ryan. At the 8:05 mark of the second period, Ken Ellis took a nice pass from Eric Troan and after his first shot was stopped, he put in his own rebound making the score 2-0 for Big V. The Big V defencemen, Ryan Hawkins and Adam Kingsma, played well and helped Ryan preserve the shutout. Emiel's, however, tried all they could to spoil the shutout with Tim Wray leading some rushes only to be stopped by the defence. Kam Cooper also had some op- portunities to score but just didn't have the luck with him. Nick Ostafichuk played well on defence and in the dying min- utes of the game, Mark Sauter had a good chance to score but Ryan came up big and got the shutout. In the second game of the night, the top two teams of the league came to play and play they did. This fast-paced game could have been a lot higher in the scoring department except that both goaltenders, Chris Thompson for Scala and Jamie Clarke for Larocque, played very well and were called on many times to make stops. Sca- la took the lead at the 4:28 mark of the first period when Greg Bruton took a pass from Jamie Page and popped in his own rebound. However, La- rocque came back at the 2:37 mark on a nice shot over the goaltender's shoulder by Jeff Harrison, on assists from Joel Phoenix and Tom Keeble. Scala went ahead in the sec- ond period on a goal by John Bacon with a nice wrist shot from the slot. In the third peri- od, Larocque came back to tie it up on a lead pass from Joel to Devon Symes to Tom Keeble to score on a backhand shot. Three minutes later, Larocque poured on the gas and Joel ~ scored on a hard wrist shot un- assisted. With 59 seconds to go in the game, Greg Bruton tied it up for the Scala team unassist- ed. Honorable mention should go to Scott Cunningham and Russ Brown for their strong ef- fort for the Scala team and to Keith Hancock and Chris Jones of the Larocque team for their strong play. Playoffs On Saturday, the same teams faced off to start the round-robin series of playoff games and these games were even more exciting than the ones from the night before. First game had Scala against Larocque and the goal scorers came out flying for this one. Scala scored the first goal of the game with Scott Cunningham scoring on a backhand with as- sists going to Todd Mitchell and Jamie Page. Within a minute, Larocque answered back on a goal by Tom Keeble over the goalie's shoulder with assists going to Jeff Harrison and Brad Monsma. Larocque went ahead by two on a goal by Tom picking up his own rebound, with the assist going to Brad. Brad scored on a breakaway with a shot into the top corner from a lead pass from Jeff, with the other assist going to Tom. With a minute left to go in the first period, Greg Bruton scored on a hard wrist shot on nice passes from Jeremy Hall and Tyler Wootton. Score at the end of one period was 3-2 for Larocque. Scala came out flying in the second period scoring two un- answered goals with Tyler tak- ing a flip shot that went in. As- sists went to Greg and Jeremy. Jeremy Pare let a slap shot go from the point that goaltender Jamie Clarke didn't even see, Score 4-3 at the end of the sec- ond period for Scala. Early in the third period, Joel tied it up for Larocque on a wrap around with assists going to Keith Hancock and Chris Jones. Larocque went ahead with 6:26 to go in the game, when Keith scored on a scram- ble in front of the net with Jon Sanders and Brad Monsma picking up the assists. Scala however would not quit and one minute later Murphy Irvine William Mount, Matthew Sturgess, passed the puck out from the corner to Tyler Wootton who one-timed it into the net. The other assist went to Greg. It looked like this one was going to end up in a tie until 50 sec- onds later when Scott Cunning- ham skated out from the corner and put the puck in the net with a hard wrist shot. Final score 6- 5 for Scala. What an exciting game to watch. Second game of the day was definitely a goaltender's battle. Ryan Fraser and Jon Cham- bers played even better than they did the night before. There was no scoring in the first peri- od, not that there weren't any scoring chances. There were good end-to-end rushes with good passing and strong skat- ing but the goalies shone. It didn't look like there was going to be any scoring in the second period until the 5:56 mark when defenceman Chris Orr went from end to end to score on a backhand to make the score 1- 0 for Big V. There was no fur- ther scoring in the second peri- od as Jon Chambers made a Local wrestlers fare well at meet On Feb. 19, sixteen members of the Port Perry Wrestling Club and the S.A. Cawker Pub- lic School team participated in their first tournament of the year. It gave our wrestlers a chance to see how they stacked up against this year's competi- tion. Nine of our wrestlers came away with medals after a long day where everyone-gave 100 per cent in all matches. Will Mount and Matt Sturg- ess came away with a 4th place while Jason Crosier, Jeff Ash- blocker stop on Ben Stephenson on a slapshot from the slot and another good blocker stop on a hard shot from Eric Troan. Chad Lance was foiled a couple of times by Ryan when he had some good scoring chances. Big V's defence came up really strong again for this one as Ryan Hawkins, Chris Orr and Adam Kingsma all played very well. At the 5:56 mark of the third period, Big V put up a big insu- rance goal when Eric Troan took a shot from the corner that Jon misjudged and it was 2-0 for Big V. Big V tried to add to their score as Steve Martyn forced Jon to make a great glove save in the closing min- utes. With three minutes left to go in the game, Emiel's really poured it on as Ryan had to make numerous stops on shots from Reid McTaggart, Law- rence Cook and Chad Lance. Nick Ostafichuk let a s¢ream- ing slapshot go from the point only to be stopped by th Big V ton, Jeff Crosier and Brad Hawker: won bronze medals. Tayma Anderson and Jeremy Park both wrestled their way to silver medals. Going undefeated on the day were Carrie Ollerton with two pins, Aaron Combdon with four pins, and James Byers with four pins, Each of these wres- tlers won trophies for their gold medal performances. Hard work in paying off and wrestlers are looking forward to their next opportunity to dis- play their skills. playoffs goalie. With 50 seconds to go in the game, Mark Sauter skated from one end of the ice to the other to score on a backhand to spoil the shutout. Emiel's pulled their goaltender to see if they could tie it up but the score remained 2-1 for Big V. Honorable Mention for this" game should go to Kam Cooper for the Emiel's team who start- ed out playing defence and then went to forward and played both very well. Also, Mark De- laney played well on defence for Emiel's. This was a great way to start the playoffs and the rest of the games for the round-robin se- ries should prove to be just as thrilling to watch as there was only a four point spread be- tween the four teams in the reg- ular season play. or Come out and watch the games next week and see how strong the Peewee teams are.
