"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 15,1994 - 27 SPORTS Shepstone Petites action Floor hockey action The Shepstone Haulage Pe- tites completed their 1993-94 league schedule with four games in the last two weeks against Richmond Hill, Whitby and Oshawa. The season finale will be the Central Regional Tournament held in Wark- worth on Easter weekend, April 1-3. The Rockettes hosted Rich- mond Hill on Saturday, March 5 and had to settle for a 4-4 tie after R.H. came back from a 4-1 deficit with three goals in a row to earn the tie. Port jumped out to a 4-1 lead thanks to the strong inspired play from Katherine with two goals and an assist. Also helping out in the scoring were Stacey with a goal and an assist, Leanne D. with a goal and Rhea and Sarah with one assist each. Any lead, no matter how great, has to be protected, and any shift in momentum can change the entire game, and that's exactly what happened with R.H. putting on the pres- sure and getting back to even ground. With five minutes left, our Port girls went back on the attack, looking for the go-ahead goal with several good scoring opportunities but the R.H. goal- ie came up with the saves to help preserve the tie. On Sunday, March 6, we trav- elled to Brooklin for an exhibi- tion game against the Whitby Novice B Select team and were caught flatfooted as the Whitby team surprised Port to the tune of 10-6. Our regular goaltender (and a super one, too) Jill, was given the night off between the pipes and played just as in- tensely on defence and even scored her first goal of the sea- son on a long shot from over the blue line that got past the Whit- by goalie. Playing in net for the first time was Shannon and she put in a solid effort with some good SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR Cartwright Minor Ball held a skate-a-thon last week to raise money for future park development. Atom house league teams playoff action On March .12, Laurentian and the Lions squared off in round two of the Atom house league playoffs. The Lions came out flying in the first period with Chris Med- ford notching two goals. John Elliott assisted on both markers with Shaun Martin adding the other helper. In the second peri- od, Chris Medford completed his hat trick with an unassisted goal. Tyler Lucus put the Lions up 4-0 early in the third with an unassisted marker of his own. Medford continued as a man on a mission notching his fourth goal of the game at 6:25 in the third period, with assists going to Paul Pickering and Cory McQuade. Laurentian finally broke through the standout net- minding of Derek Ellicott at 3:44 when Eric Bird potted an unassisted goal. Goals by Jason Redman (assisted by Gordon Kilner) and Gordon Kilner in the last minute of play made the score close at 5-3 but it was too little, too late for Lauren- tian. John Barton's play between the pipes kept Laurentian with- in reach throughout an exciting and entertaining match. Both teams displayed excellent team work. Good luck during round three! stops on the Whitby opponents. Port's scorers were Stacey with three goals, Leanne L. and Katherine with a goal apiece, Kimberley with two assists and Sarah and Jill, each with an as- sist. On Saturday, March 12, Oshawa was our net opponent with the Rockettes prevailing in a 7-6 seesaw battle that fea- tured some rough play and chippiness on the ice. Nicole put us out in front with her hard shot to the corner with Stacey assisting. Then Sa- rah made it 2-0 on a great effort from behind the net and around in front, scoring on a backhand shot. But Oshawa's No. 15 got by our defence for three in a row in less than a minute to end the first period 3-2. Stacey scored two quick goals with Kimberley assisting on the first to put us back in the lead 4-3, but Oshawa fought back in front 5-4 with the next two goals. Now it was Port's turn for getting the lead back with Leanne D. taking a pass from Katherine and driving for the net to score the tying goal. Then Stacey picked up her third of the game for a short- lived 6-5 margin. Oshawa's No. 15 (five goals for the days) got them back on even turf with five minutes left but Port won the game on Stacey's fourth of the game with Nicole assisting with only 1:13 remaining. The Rockettes' final game of the league schedule was in Brooklin on Sunday, March 13 against rival Whitby Petite Bs. The Port girls needed a big ef- fort and a win in this one to keep their hopes alive for a berth in the league champion- ship game, with the two top teams advancing to the final. Their strong play and hard work paid off with Fred's crew skating to an 8-2 victory. The big gun for the Rockettes was Stacey with another four goal outburst and a solid two-way game. Port's other goals came from Leanne D., Kimberley, Sheena and Rhea with Rhea and Sarah drawing assists. Jill was back between the pipes, fresh from her one game defen- sive debut, and back in fine form with a couple of sparkling saves. Also, although not making the scoresheet for these games, the improved play from Alaina, Heather and Shannon has been a great contribution to the over- all play and success of the team. Now, it's a waiting game to see who makes he final, plus the excitement and anticipation of the upcoming Regional Cham- pionships on Easter weekend. Stay tuned for more Port Perry Ringette action.
