Scugog Council granted $600 to PPHS to cover partial expens- es of a job skills conference scheduled for May. PPHS officials came to coun- cil recently seeking $1,600 to costs of Employability Skills '94, a pilot project implemented by the Durham Board of Educa- tion. The local high school was se- lected as the site of the one-day conference stressing employa- bility. But it took some haggling be- fore council came to terms with the final figure of $600. Some councillors argued that $600 was too much, opting instead for $200, while others felt they should not contribute at all. "If it is a pilot project of the Durham Board of Education, then Durham Board of Educa- tion can pay for it," Regional Councillor Yvonne Christie said. Ward 3 Councillor Ken Gads- den argued that granting $200 to the cause was "gintzy" and ex- pressed concern as to the mes- sage that was being sent to the students. "Two hundred dollars is a lit- tle gintzy when you look at what is trying to be achieved," he said. "We should be sending a positive signal that we're inter- ested in job creation in the town- ship."
