MASSEY FERQUSON Vallance Equipment & Rental Ltd. 114 Winchester Road, Brooklin, Ontario LOB 1CO (905) 655-3291 or (905) 655-3122 | ------------------ "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Province Proposes hunting and fishing bans on public lands Ontario's Natural Resources Minister Howard Hampton has announced that he plans wide- spread hunting and motorized access bans on more than 166,000 acres of public land spread across the province, breaking his word to the Onta- rio Federation of Anglers and Hunters (OFAH). In February, at the OFAH Annual Conference in Windsor, Hampton said the 17 "Keep it Wild" spaces announced recent- ly would not include the wide ranging bans. Hegmade a simi- lar comment on the OFAH weekly TV show "The Angler & Hunter." Hampton's voice is captured on audio tape, as he addressed an audience of 350 at the confer- ence. He said: "We are not pro- posing in every one of the sites to eliminate hunting or to elimi- nate the use of boats and mo- tors. There may be a couple though." . "But the subsequent formal announcement makes it clear that the province intends other- wise: more than 90 per cent is pegged for "no-hunting" zones. In addition, motorized access and small boat motors essential for fishing and access will be banned in the same areas. "A 60-day public consultation period will be conducted in each of the 17 areas, plus Toronto. But we're doubtful that the min- ister will be listening," said OFAH President Terry Smelt- zer. "Hampton has already stat- ed what his plans are. I would love to be wrong, but I'll bet he doesn't make any substantial changes based on publicinput." "What we were promised just weeks ago wouldn't happen, has happened," said Rick Morgan, OFAH executive vice- president. "If there areas are so beauti- ful and valuable that they de- serve special status, and if hunting and fishing have oc- curred there for generations, hunting and fishing obviously have had no negative impact," SUNDERLAR Morgan said. "Why suddenly ban them? The minister has not only gone back on his word, the bans on hunting and access don't make any sense." Morgan pointed out that the ban, in many places, will stop generations old hunting and fishing traditions, passed from family to family. "What Mr. Hampton propos- es is to chip away at a corner- stone of our natural heritage," said Morgan. "I think he'll find that thousands of people simply won't accept this. Why should they? It doesn't make sense on any level." Hampton has told the OFAH that more of these "Keep it Wild" spaces will be created in the near future. The OFAH is Ontario's larg- est and oldest conservation or- ganizations. Its 70,000 mem- bers are spread across the province's map. Courtney: Elevation A from $139,900.
