WL L ndinad op 18 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 22,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SProrTs Emmerson win championship at tourney Success finally visited the Port Perry Emmerson Insu- rance Bantam House League hockey team - and what a time to arrive! All year this team has struggled to find a winning for- mula. At the Bantam House League tournament March 18, they discovered the solutih has two words, teamwork and de- termination. Game one matched the two local Port Perry teams, Emmer- son Insurance and Swamp Auto in a terrific contest. Hard skat- ing, excellent forechecking and sharp goaltending by both teams produced a very close game. A second goal for Emmerson followed quickly when Mike Lott scored on a tinal solo effort. Not to be denied, Swamp replied late in the period as Jeremy Gibson tallied one from Kris Wootton. The second and third periods featured end-to-end action with Gibson of Swamp scoring again in the second, assisted by Kevin Edwards. Brennan Arsenault of Swamp netted the winner in the third, assisted by Aaron Levy and Cory Wiatrzyk. An empty net goal was scored by Wootton assisted by Levy, late in the third period. The game ended 4-2 in favor of Swamp Auto. What a contest! Emmerson were down, but definitely not out. The second game was a tight-checking match with a tough team from Keswick. Emmerson had to win in order to advance to the next round in the tournament and they came up big! The pace was frantic. Kes- wick opened scoring early in the second period on a hard shot from Mark Tremblett. At this point, Emmerson goalie Luke Carnaghan decided that he in- tended to win and blanked the Keswick team for the rest of the game. Luke Newman and Matt Otis gave a great defensive display, holding off the bad guys until Bob Cracknell evened the game late in the period, with assists from Whitfield and Malcolm. Then, early in the third period, David Kamminga potted the game winner on a fine three- way passing play from Kevin Cochrane and Brennan Mal- colm. Game three, the Consolation Championship Final! Emmer- son knew they had a handful with their opponents from St. Catharines. This team ad- vanced to the final by trouncing their previous opponents 11-1 and made it look easy. In the first period, David Kamminga picked where he left off the previous game when he grabbed a slick pass from McConkey and snapped it in. Almost immediately, St. Catha- rines replied with a nice goal by Jeff Thomas, assisted by Fegan and Chaisson. They they got another as MacDonald scored, assisted by Demizio. Emmer- son bore down, with tremen- dous forechecking by Paul Shri- gley and Steve Hiemstra preventing St. Catharines from taking control. Finally, late in the period, Mike Lott took a re- bound from a hard point shot by Kevin Cochrane and flipped it into the net for Emmerson's second goal. Tie game. Early in the second period, MacDonald scored again as St. Catharines appeared to be pull- ing ahead. "Not this time," said Mike Lott as he scored his sec- ond of the game, assisted by Whitfield and Newman. Short- ly thereafter, Ramminga took a great pass from Phil Donnelly, barrelled down the boards and scored his second of the game. Emmerson went into the third period ahead by one goal. The third period was a clas- sic. St. Catharines tied the game midway through the peri- od on a goal by Tapp after Luke Carnaghan displayed all-star form, stopping shot after shot. Play was hot and heavy up and down the ice until Brennan Malcolm decided to score his first goal this year - the game winner - on a neat passing play from Cochrane and McConkey. Talk about waiting for the right moment. The game ended 5-4 in favor of Port Perry Emmerson Insu- rance. They had won the Conso- lation Championship! Looking back over the games in the tour- nament, each goal, ever) blocked shot and every save was necessary to accomplish the team's goal. Had any player contributed less than thei best, the team would not have succeeded. That's what it takes to be winners. Broomball playoffs | Swamp Garage advance to finals Swamp Garage pulled off a minor upset of sorts as they eliminated Woody's Auctions on Sunday winning the rubber match of their best of three semi-final by a 2-1 score. They pulled ahead midway through the first when Dave Sampson fed Jason Price. Both squads had a couple of chances just prior to the end of the frame with goaltenders Keith Trem- blay of Swamp Garage and Woody's Rick Lees coming up with fine efforts to keep the gcore where it was. Mike Butt had an opportunity to put Swamp Garage up by two only to miss the short side on a two man break. At the other end Woody's Tom Powell and Jim Gregg were stopped. Powell did tie it though at the halfway point of the second pe- riod with the assist coming from Neil Woodrow on a three on two rush. With 4:37 to play Swamp Garage were given what you would call a gift goal when Lees came out of his net to shoot it up ice only to pass it right to Dan Taylor who proceeded to put it in the empty net. Woody's pulled their goal- tenders with 1:20 left on the clock for the extra attacker and twice came within inches of forcing the overtime. The clos- est came off the face off to the right of Tremblay with four sec- onds on the clock when Powell pushed the ball between Brian Pomeroy's legs and threw a pass over to the left wing where Ken St. Amant was at the goal crease and directed it by the post. Next Sunday will see thi start of the best of three cham pionship series with Monsm: Electric nusting Swamp Garag at 4:30 p.m. : ) ) ! ! | 1 1 A = ad TT a Se a' oo Co
