"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 22,1994 - 3 os By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star § Scugog Fire Department #4 Hall #1 received its new dl pumper truck on Saturday. | The state-of-the-art | machine, purchased at a cost we| of $230,000 was delivered to 1 the local hall from Waterloo #~| on Saturday. The fire truck . } was figured in the 1993 town- | ship budget. Fire Chief Don Steele described the new pumper as an absolute necessity for the township's fire department. "It is a front-line pumper. It was needed as one of the oth- ers was about to quit," he said. A 1961 pumper was used as a trade-in on the purchase of the new pumper. The new truck is the first custom-made pumper, or new truck, the local fire depart- ment has ever had. The pumper is bigger, including a six-man cab, larger pump and is totally automatic. The new truck will not be in service for at least two weeks to allow the department's drivers to train on it. Chief Steele spent six hours in Red Deer, Alberta recently, learn- ing the ins and outs of the new equipment. Once it is in motion Chief Steele said it will cut down on response time, as the higher- powered pumper will be able to climb uphill faster than the older models. "It is a modern fire truck, one that is up to date giving us equipment for the 21st Century," he said. Firefighters take delivery of new pumper J.
