~ a -- "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" Clubs. Sketches of Scugog From Page 2 or "Skugog." Remember, Major Wilmot in his 1809-1810 survey referred to this lake as "Branch of Rice Lake" and in his 1816 survey of Cartwright, the east- ern arm is labelled "Muddy Lake." Nonquon Nonquon has clearly evolved from "Minisi-nonkwon." "Min- 1s" meaning "Island" and "Nonkwon" meaning "Woods all in one Spot." This was the name given by the Mississaugas to what is now Seven Mile Island on the western side of Scugog Is- land. Its name is also a remin- der to us of the fact that the en- tire Scugog Basin was a densely wooded area when the first Eu- ropean settlers arrived at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Chemung Lake Chemung is a Mississauga word meaning "Place of the Ca- noes." Mississaugas Today The Mississauga chief today is Gary Edgar. His maternal grandmother was one of the Marsdens encountered by Chamberlain in 1888. She mar- ried Percy Edgar and together they had 11 children. The Elli- ott and McCew families have no surviving descendants. The successful farms which Chamberlain talked about de- clined shortly after the begin- ning of this century. Chief Ed- gar recalls that his father, who was born in 1911, remembered an extensive and flourishing or- chard on their land. Only vague ~ remnants of this remain. The Scugog Mississaugas point out with pride that every male member of their band en- listed for the Armed Forces in 1914. This is an accomplish- ment shared by no other group in Canada, European or Native. The unfortunate consequence of this was that the farms fell into disuse. At the cessation of hos- tilities, the men found it diffi- cult to return to the strenuous and disciplined demands of farming life. In addition, the scourge of alcohol began to take its toll. Some of the farm land was rented out and some even- tually was sold. Rebirth It is only recently that the Mississaugas of Scugog have begun to reassert their tradi- tional pride and to take com- mand of their lives through self employment and creative en- deavors. New homes have been built and older ones renovated. A new First Nation Office and Centre has been built, a Centre which Chief Edgar hopes will be enjoyed by all Island residents, Native and Non-Native. Plans are underway for more build- ings, creating employment for Island residents and other trades people. Trees are being planted, real and symbolic. Chief Edgar has good reason to look to the past with a mixed sense of anguish and pride but he can clearly look to the future with an air of optimism.
