"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 26,1994 - 5 Proposed bus service for township residents met with mixed reaction By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star A proposed bus service in Port Perry has met with mixed reac- tion from local council mem- bers. Herb Cornforth, operator of Evergreen Bus Lines, plans to begin a bus route servicing the downtown and residential are- as beginning May 1. According to Mayor Howard Hall who met with Mr. Corn- forth concerning his plan re- cently, the route would cover much of the downtown area, as well as the surrounding resi- dential developments. The schedule would operate every 30 minutes from 5:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and every hour from 9 a.m. to 3 .m. Additional bus service is planned for runs to Whitby GO Station, Oshawa Centre and General Motors. But the plan met with some opposition from Scugog council- lors when introduced to the plan on Monday. Ward 2 Councillor Marilyn Pearce, whose constituency makes up the majority of the route, is concerned about the safety of the bus routes running through the residential areas. "I welcome the fact that we're going to have bus service, but when it's in residential areas, SCOTT ANDERSON / PORT PERRY STAR Katie Pelelkis, 7, from Scugog Point, enjoyed the fun day and white elephant sale held at the Blackstock Recreation Centre on Saturday to raise money for the Blackstock Co-op Nursery. Under the present bylaw, the township has no jurisdiction over public bus services and the routes in town. This bothers Councillor Pearce. The councillor argues the township should be able to regu- late the drop-off points and bus stops for the company to ensure itis done safely. "I'm a little concerned about putting bus stops in residential areas," she said. "I'm worried about the safety aspects of this proposal." The councillor believes the residents will object to the safe- ty aspects of the route as well. The councillor is calling on the township to investigate the matter. She believes Scugog should have the ultimate say in the route and placement of the stops. Although Mayor Hall is in fa- vor of a bus route in Port Perry, he is more interested in a ser- vice to the southern portions of Durham Region. He will continue tc push for this, noting that GO Bus service to Oshawa and Whitby is still an option. Councillor Pearce is also in fa- vor of the north-south service, but only if a central depot is es- tablished in town.
