Rot anita SKIL Sealine. SRE eS ES eB Ee CEE 2 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 3,1994 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Parents voice concern for school safety By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Epsom Public School is un- safe and parents are demanding immediate action. Zoltan Domik, whose -chil- dren attend the school, told the Port Perry Star last week, that many parents associated with the school are concerned about safety at the small rural facility. The concerns include unsafe conditions of the playground and lack of full-time supervi- sion. According to Mr. Domik, the parents are concerned that Ep- som P.S. has only a part-time secretary at the school. The par- ents believe this is an unsafe ar- rangement for the students. They fear the children are at 12550 Simcoe St., Port Perry 985-4353 (just 2 minutes south of Port Perry on the Oshawa Road) risk from potential danger due to the lack of adult presence in the school. "We, as a community, for safe- ty, security and concern of our children on a main thorough- fare, want a secretary there to provide services all day," Mr. Domik said. "We need a secretary to pro- vide a presence at the front desk all day." He noted that Greenbank Public School, with the same amount of students, in a less busy area, has a full-time secre- tary. This 1ssue was brought up at a meeting in late March with the principal, parents associa- tion and Board of Education of- ficials, but Mr. Domik said a LIFE. At the present time he said the post is covered for the majority of the day by an adult. He did note, however, that he 1s still pursuing actively" a so- lution to the problem. The parents are also con- cerned that the Epsom play- ground is below safety stan- dards. This point was proven recent- ly after the equipment was torn down and is yet to be replaced, Mr. Domik said. Mr. Domik also points to the basketball courts on which the students play. He says it is une- ven and poses safety hazards with various dips and potholes. "It's in the worst shape and they're doing nothing about it," he said. "Let's put money aside and consider the safety of our children." Mr. Domik is calling on the school board to rectify the situa- tion. "I think it's up to the school board to address this and do something about it now," he said. "It's not a matter of dollars and cents when a child gets hurt." The parents took it upon themselves recently to raise money for the equipment, after becoming frustrated at the state of the existing facilities. Despite the accusations, Mr. Fisher said the concerns are be- ing addressed. In fact, a safety inspector is scheduled to tour the school today (May 3) to "pro- vide a second opinion on the is- sue. 4 As for the asphalt, Mr. Fisher learned on Friday that it will be repaired. ei Zoltan Domik, a resident of Epsom, is concerned about this children's safety in the school's playground which he claims is unsafe. He points to the posts found in the ground which he says are unsafe. See story. Pasture Season soon This year use Gallagher power fencing.
