By Scott Anderson Port Perry Star Love is in the air at the Stables at Greystone this sum- mer. The restaurant is adding an- other dimension to its menu by offering dinner theatre on Tues- day nights. And to kick off the affair is AR. Gurney's "Love Letters." This two-act, two character play takes the audience on a 50-year romantic ride tracing the lives of the two characters through the exchange of letters. "Love Letters is not a conven- tional play, it's a theatrical event," said Gordon Gresko, who portrays Andrew. The play explores the rela- tionship between Andrew Ladd, a successful lawyer and Melissa Gardner, a rebellious artist. The script traces their relation- ship, lives and romance for a 50- year period beginning when they are seven. And if both actors appear as if they are deeply involved in their characters, it is because both have experienced similar situa- tions in their lives. Mr. Gresko was involved in a long distance affair with a wom- an in Washington, while Betty Jackson (Melissa) was involved in a brief affair with a man who enjoyed receiving greeting cards. She would send a number of these cards a week to him. Ms. Jackson is also able to re- late to the personality of the character. "[ really love the character. She's great, she's flamboyant and opinionated as I am," she said. "There's a lot about her i in the character that reminds me of myself." The play, which consists of the two characters reading each other's letters, is perfect for the small dinner theatre such as Greystone. "A smaller room like this is much more intimate," Mr. Gres- ko said, adding the venue will allow the audience to dictate the pace of the performers. "In this type of venue, the au- dience gets the maximum bene- fit." When the play opens at the restaurant tonight (May 3), it will be the premiere for both performers. It will also be the first time that dinner theatre has been of- fered at the restaurant. Stables at Greystone owner Judy Bonnell said she had been considering the idea for some time and believes the time is right. "I think it will go well," she said. "We're getting a positive response."
