Fertilizer is classified by a three number code, which de- notes the ratio of these active in- gredients. You should choose a fertilizer with a high first num- ber (Nitrogen) to promote a fast green-up and healthy growth. A ALDA Garden Centre slow release formula is also rec- ommended so your lawn does not receive all of the nitrogen at once. Leaving the clippings on the lawn is also a good source of nitrogen and does not contrib- ute to excess thatch, as some may think. Phosphorous is used by the plant to develop a strong root system. Potash is required to improve overall hardiness and disease resistance. Phos- phorous and Potash are the ma- jor components of fall fertilizer. If thatch was a problem last year it should be removed. Thatch is the layer of dead grass between the soil and the new growth at the top. If this layer is too thick your lawn will suffer. It can prevent new shoots from starting, and is a haven for in- sects. Many hardware stores carry an attachment for your lawnmower that remove thatch. If weeds are a problem you may want to treat them, either chemically or by hand. If you pull them by hand you must make sure that you get the en- tire root or the plant will grow Gov't Licenced SSRs Fully Insured lan's Weed Control O/0O lan McCrae (905) 985-0346 FREE ESTIMATES WEED SPRAYING e FERTILIZING e INSECT CONTROL Upright Evergreens 60 cm (24") A $25. 00 54 750 EES on Include: Mountbatten, Spartan and Moonglow junipers Sale ends June 30th. If you decide that a chemical treatment 1s necessary, you may wish to hire a professional who would know the best time to apply the herbicide and would apply it at the proper rate. If you decide to treat your own lawn make sure to read the label carefully, because timin is critical for proper control an safety. There are many advantages besides aesthetics to a healthy green lawn: 1. One acre of turf has the cooling effect of a 70 ton air con- ditioner. 2. One 50' x 50' lawn provides enough oxygen for a family of four. 3. The soft green of turf ab- sorbs and reduces glare. 4. Turf acts as a sound ab- sorber. 5. Lawns help reduce some causes of allergies. Courtesy of, Ian's Weed Control Perennials popular Perennials are enjoying a re- surgence of popularity which is "increasing every year. They come in a vast array of colors and heights and there are plants suitable for all types of light and soil conditions - wet, cool, hot, dry, sandy, shady or full sun. It is not necessary to prepare a large bed and plant an elaborate array of perenni- als. A small shrub bed can be brightened up throughout the summer with a glorious show of color at a very modest cost. With careful selection of plants itis possible to have color in the perennial garden from early spring right through to frost. Spring can be welcomed with a few plants of Potentilla verna 'nana' or Alpine Cinque- foil. This dainty plant grows 4" high and forms a compact mound covered with tiny yellow flowers. The well known Alys- sum saxatile or Basket of Gold is ahother popular spring plant. This is now sold as Aurinia sax- atile. Saxifrage x arendsii comes in red, pink or white and combines nicely with the others for April to June color. For mid-summer color, Gail- lardia Goblin reaches 12" and Gaillardia Monarch is useful where a taller plant is required. The yellow/red coloring bright- ens up the border and provides excellent cut flowers. For inter- est and color in July/August the perennial Geranium is hard to beat. These come in many colors and are becoming very popular. Fall brings the Chrysanthe- mums, not only the cushion type which bloom until frost, but Chrysanthemum x rubel- lum 'Mary Stoker" a golden apri- cot, or 'Clara Curtis' a deep pink. Fall Asters can round out the garden with the dainty 'An- neke' a pinkish red and 'Lady- in-Blue' a pure blue. These are both novi-belgii cultivars. Courtesy of, Analda Garden Centre
