This past week saw the Mer- chant Juveniles play only one game and the score indicated the type of game played. The team has been slow getting their bats going due to a late start, and no one was panicking since the Merchants have been playing good defence and were generally in the games. But the 9-0 loss against the Oshawa Flying Squirrels saw the usual- ly reliable defense break down and allow four unearned runs. Tim Timms was the only Mer- chant player to safely reach base on a double in the third in- ning. Unfortunately, he was left stranded at third. Scott MclLen- nan was also left stranded at third in the sixth inning. There are some very good teams in the Oshawa Men's League and the calibre of play has stepped up a notch over last year. Coaches and players of the Port team are not discouraged and the intensity to win will be back as the team prepares for its first tournament in New Hamburg on June 11 and 12, and for the Junior Elimination Tournament in July to be host- ed by Oshawa. The Merchant team appre- ciates the sponsor's support, and this year the new colors of blue and grey have replaced the previous under-sized uniforms which have seen many innings of play over the last three years. Peewee MoJacks win again The Peewee Modacks of the York Durham League played host to East Gwillimbury last Tuesday night and came away with another win. In the first inning pitcher Jon Froats forced the opposition to hit infield flys to both Ryan Hawkins at third and to Ryan Moynes who made a nice over the shoulder catch at first base. The next batter up flew out to Derek Tindall in left field. Jon hit along shot over the left field- er's head for his first triple of the season, however he was left standing there at the end of the inning. East Gwillimbury scored a run in the second on a couple of base hits. Port, however, would not let them keep the lead as Ryan Moynes reached base on a walk and Brad Monsma drove himin on an infield out. In the third inning Jon gave up three walks in a row and things weren't looking too good. The next two batters flew out to Darryl Dalton at second and Scott Jeffrey in centre field. A run scored on the fly to Scott and the next batter up singled to left to bring in another run. Jon stopped the rally by strik- ing out the next batter. In the bottom ot the third the East Gwillimbury pitching staff gave up a total of seven walks. Darryl Dalton, Ryan McQuade, Jon, Derek, Brad, Chris Jones and Mike Versage all had keen eyes at the plate. Ryan Hawkins, Jon Froats and Scott Jeffrey had singles to help the home team run up a total of seven runs in theinning. Chris Jones came on to pitch the last inning and after giving up a walk to the first batter set- tled down to strike the next three batters out. Chris Jones drove in Port's last run of the game on an infield groundout. Final score 9-3 for Port Perry. Port travels to Oshawa this Wednesday evening and is off to it's first tournament of the year in Simcoe on Saturday. Jr. Leading the way for the Mid- get Angels, was Robin Adcock in pitching an eight-hitter against rivals Whitby. Michelle Scott led the attack hitting wise, with three hits, Brooke Wilkinson, Amber Wood and Robin Adcock all had two hits each. Nikki Christie had two R.B.1L.s for the night. Game two saw the Intermedi- ate "Angels" win over the Oshawa Royals Jr. (2) 10-0 in their first league action. Angela Davis threw a three hit game, backed up by some timely hit- ting. Led by two young ladies, Nancy McConnell and Gena Spence with three hits each, while Lisa Crooker, Sherri Brown, and pitcher Angela Da- vis all had two hits each. Kim Stewart with a triple also had three R.B.I.s for the night, Gena Spence had two runs batted in, as did Angela Davis in helping herself to the win. There is no league action next week as both teams will be in London, Ont. at a tournament and travel does not permit us to get home early enough. The games scheduled for next week are rescheduled to the end of July. The Midget Angels had a very successful weekend while win- ning two in Markham and los- ing two in the Markham Ladies Rep.
